Important takeaways and things I learned at the event:
  • The model coming out after the R2 will be the R3X, followed by the R3.
  • The stadium headlights on the R3X prototype needs to be more flush with the light bar than it currently is, imo.
  • The R2 prototype was averaging like 4 mi/kWh!
  • The R1 Gen 2 Accent trim interior is ?. Its seats are more comfy than in the Gen 1. The blue slate interior paired with the lighter wood and dark trim accents is awesome.
  • They still don’t officially call their Gear Guard character Gary, but I got the general manager to admit they call him Gary unofficially.
  • RJ is a pretty cool guy. He chatted with me for a few mins despite being super busy! Also, he’s tall, but less taller than I expected from the videos I saw him in.
  • I like Rivian Blue more than Storm Blue because it pops more.
  • The white on the R2 looks nicer than Glacier White.

R3X still needs to do something about the taillights, right? Not compliant with whatever code it is that says they need to be visible from the sides?

Rivian needs to open up sales of the R3X and R3 line into the EU. These will sell like crazy.
That was a stated plan at the time the R2 and R3 were announced. But the company will need to be so much better with service networks in countries in which it plans to sell, because the EU doesn’t play when it comes to things like this.

I wonder if Rivian would pay VW to be the servicing location, and an owner would take his R3 to the local VW/Skoda/SEAT/Cupra dealer to get repairs done. That would be an immediate solution to having a servicing safety net in delivery areas.
