I've read a lot on the rivianforums.com website, but have yet to post or comment. My thoughts one month post delivery follow. I originally reserved a R1S November 18th of 2021. Delayed delivery until deciding to purchase the vehicle in July of 2024. I had purchased a Tesla Model Y LR in January of 2023 and wasn't sure I would complete the reservation and take delivery of the Rivian R1S. We have enjoyed our Model Y and find it to be an incredible value. Following the release of the Gen 2 R1S and the numerous improvements including a reduction in the ECUs, improved suspension, improved chips running the displays, and a dual motor option with a Max battery to extend the range to 410mi., I opted to fulfill my reservation. My sole disappointment was that the refresh did not include a native NACS charging port. The Rivian replaced a Mercedes Benz C300 4matic with sport package and a Burmester sound system.

The quality and build of the Rivian R1S far exceeds that of our Model Y. The Rivian has the interior quality of our Mercedes, unlike our Model Y. However, this is hardly a fair comparison due to the cost differential of the two vehicles. We have yet to detect any quality or build issues with the exception of some wind noise from the front driver side window that is noticeable at speeds greater than 80mph. We have scheduled a service appointment to address this issue and to have our spare tire delivered and installed in the trunk compartment.
Delivery was scheduled at our local service center and was a very pleasant experience, very similar to the delivery of our Model Y. I inspected the vehicle and could not find any build or quality control issues. I will say the audio system was not nearly as impressive as I expected it to be. The Burmester system in our Mercedes and the audio system in our Model Y were far superior in my opinion. After a few software updates and small changes to the EQ I made following the advice of another post on rivianforums.com, I subsequently am very impressed and find it to be better than the system in our Model Y.
I have 748 miles on the Rivian and have thus far always charged at home. Using a A2Z NACS to J1772 20Kw adapter has worked well with our Tesla level 2 charger. The Rivian consistently charges at 9.2kW at our home. I look forward to receiving the Tesla adapter to be able to use Tesla Super Chargers, which we have found to be great for long-distance traveling in our Model Y. I am on the reservation list, but expect it may be a year prior to receiving this adapter. I drive more aggressively and enjoy the acceleration benefits of an EV. Consumption has averaged 2.3mi/kWh. For over 12,750mi in our Model Y we have averaged 3.64mi/kWh. There is a significant difference in the weight and drag coefficient of these vehicles, so this difference was expected.
Additional items purchased and installed include:
TWRAPS Matte Screen protectors (all three screens): high quality and definitely recommend
Gyeon Leather Shield EVO 50mL ceramic coating for interior: easy application and has worked great in our Model Y
Rivian all weather mats: purchased directly from Rivian and love the quality and look although there are other less expensive options
LinerX cargo mat for behind third row seats: good quality
XPEL Prime XR Plus window tint: front windows tinted at 30% and all rear windows tinted at 55%, legal in Colorado, reduces heat gain, and improves privacy
Rivian compact spare tire kit: on order and to be delivered and installed in 1mo, Rivian honored pre-order pricing so will cost less than $500
1Up Equip D bike rack: fits great without an extension and when positioned flat the rear bottom gate can be opened; very easy to access the rear even with the rack positioned upright by opening the liftgate
This is the most impressive vehicle I have ever owned and am thrilled with the purchase. I have also followed the news of the Lucid Gravity and expect that it will also be an incredible vehicle. I considered waiting for more information to be released for the Gravity, but ultimately decided to purchase the R1S. My wife initially thought the vehicle was ugly, but when we visited a Rivian store in Denver, CO she loved the vehicle and couldn't wait for me to fulfill the reservation. Our boys love the vehicle and appreciate its ability to transport them and their friends. It has so much more room than our Model Y and the quality is excellent. I've never wanted a large SUV as I have always appreciated the driving dynamics of a sedan. The R1S drives really nice and I find that I prefer the low ride height and medium suspension setting for city/highway driving. With the most recent software updates I am very happy with the audio system. The Rivian R1S is an incredible vehicle and we could not be more impressed with its occupant and cargo capacity delivered in a size that is very fun to drive.
