Thought to share bit related to Rivian about the short getaway.

Total energy used: 422 kWh
Total miles driven: 738.3 miles
Average mi/kWh: 1.76 (hitch mounted RockyMounts bicycle rack with part of the wheels and handle bar exposed beyond the rear R1S body from 2 bikes)
Route taken: 5-55-91-15-395-203 and reverse
Charging stops (RAN): Inyokern and Bishop (both directions)

Started 100% SOC from home and stopped at Inyokern. Rivian nav planned a stop at Olancha but at least there is a clean bathroom and a burger place at Inyokern AND more terminals to charge than Olancha so we stopped earlier than needed and had lunch.

Charge to 90% SOC at Bishop. We were in Mammoth for 3 nights and needed to drive up to Mammoth Mountain Bike Park as well as some in town driving. Left Mammoth at 40% SOC and got back to Bishop RAN at 28% SOC. Charged to 80% at Bishop and picked up two loafs of bread (Rye and Asiago-JalapeƱo) at Shat's.

Final stop at Inyokern and charged to 80% SOC and got home at 9% SOC.

Most of the drive, with exception of going through communities and single lane construction zone on 395 was at 80~82mph.

I realize the winter range and ability to skip charging in the winter will be different. Still, its a reference point for anyone who feels uncomfortable not having DCFC option in Mammoth (unless you have NACS adapter).

Final screen upon return:

Cool! Sounds like a good trip overall.

do you mind adding time spent at those stops also? I think we are missing how much SOC you left Olancha at.

battery? DM/Quad etc?

Thank you for sharing the data points on this route in your R1S. My family did this very trip in June in our MX 75D for the first and probably last time. We have a dual max and figure stops at Inyokern and Bishop RANs should do the trick in either summer or winter. Plenty of Tesla charging options along the way if more are needed.

Yeah sorry about that. It used to be the only discriminator was T or S, and tire/wheel configuration. Now we have G1, G2, QM/DM/TM soon, and Std, Std+, Large, Max and additional tire/wheel choices....

Our R1S is G1, QM, Large on 275/50/22 OE tires.

Never stopped at Olancha. We stopped at Inyokern both directions.

Time spent...hmmm, I didn't pay attention because it's a function of how much I needed to charge rather than how long.

On the way up, it was long enough to use the bathroom and eat lunch (we always plan nature/food breaks with charing) at Inyokern. We had packed a sandwich from home. At Bishop, to get to 90 took a while. Maybe 45~50 min?.

On the way back, at Bishop, around 30 min at the most. We went in to Schat's bakery, had sandwich made for lunch to eat at Inyokern.

Last stop at Inyokern was about 30 min again.

Like I'd said, really didn't keep track to time since I have no control how long it takes to charge to a desired SOC. That part is it is what it is....

Just to be clear, got home at 9%.

That said, I do have my setting on the trip router to arrive with 10% SOC, when planning a route. I have been road tripping on EVs for over 6 yrs between Tesla and Rivian so I'm good with running charge down to single digits on an occasion.

I have actually ran down to -15 miles on my Tesla once as I was quite puckered up to get to the Supercharger (there is a large supercharger gap between Grapevine and Fresno on 99). The only thing that saved me was that I'd read online as the saga was happening that there was a reserve of about 25 miles on Tesla. It's true, there definitely is a reserve on Tesla and hope there is one on Rivian too....

From Inyokern to my house (couple of miles from the beach) is mostly downhill and have done this exact route before with R1S so I was just fine and not worried about running out of charge.

I’ve run out once with a Leaf so a little bit paranoid.

Yeah, I don’t think that’s bad at all if you have a home charger. Even otherwise, well you’re home

Considering you spent significant time at 80-82mph, I'm actually impressed with your efficiency with two bikes hanging off the back. Granted, they are mostly in the air pocket formed behind the R1S anyway, but the handle bars and tires do poke out into the airstream.
