The rumor is its the Max pack but software locked. its not actually selectable (yet) on the website but apparently Rivian may call folks who are ordering Large pack to see if they want the Large+ and get it sooner. That might mean people aren't buying the Max pack - probably too pricey.

It makes sense for Rivian to do this if the Max pack is not selling. People can buy the vehicle at a lower price out the door and they can upgrade later on. Rivian moves inventory, people get their vehicles sooner and have the option for more range later on. Doesn't seem like any big negatives. If you can't software unlock more range later on, it kinda doesnt make sense for them to do this. Otherwise why sell the Max pack as the Large+ pack?

Caught wind of this from Chris Hilbert on Twitter. No idea where he got this but the website seems to indicate he's onto something.

Anyone who has a Large R1S on order get a call from Rivian about this?

I wouldn't be surprised if the large is a software locked max pack. With access to the Tesla superchargers most folks could even get by with the standard range pack. Studies done over the years... don't remember off the top...suggested that 300 miles was the sweet spot. So your probably right that folks are trying to save a few $$$ by going with large vs max pack.

I’d be curious on this potential software lock and how it plays out. Seems like a similar behavior we’ve seen from Rivian before when they want to move products. Especially for us Gen 1 Standard+ pack owners. I sent an email to Rivian to comment on this and they pointed me to their latest news. ?‍♂

I have mixed feelings about the whole idea but do wonder how they might adjust the charging curve. Will it taper unnecessarily early to match the Large pack or will you be able to charge fast deeper into the usable capacity?

Soooo they’re selling max packs as software locked large+? WTF Rivian? I thought you were trying to get profitable. If people aren’t buying the max packs then stop making them.
It reduces manufacturing and repair complexity significantly if it's all the same physical part. I wouldn't like the idea of my car weighing more than it needs too, but if they use that reserve smartly as a buffer it could also help a bit with long term life.

If it behaves the same as the Standard+, then you would have a good buffer charging to 85% or more knowing it’s still not even close to the full potential of the battery.

whats likely happened is they prebuilt various configurations (not custom configs) with Max packs and those are not selling as fast as they hoped - which shouldn't be a surprise based on the price.

since they have inventory sitting, its better to get them sold as "Large+" at a reduced price and then have the option to have customers upgrade to the Max via software update. unsold inventory is not good for a car manufacturer so this allows customers to buy at a lower price out the door and then upgrade when they have more money and/or need the range. ideal? maybe not but makes sense in the short term.

I'd go down to a large plus if it means getting the R1S around the same time as the max pack. I don't really need "400" miles of range

Just an observation ... battery size is NOT encoded in the 2025 Rivian VINs.

That's a change from 2024 models where the 6th digit was B for large dual and C for max dual.
