Of course they are going to deny, especially how early it is. Claire stated they don't even have all the details finished yet for the JV.

Makes perfect sense. It would be premature to confirm something that's not settled. They may be working on setting this up, but so long as the details are not finalized and agreed to by both parties I'd think it's true to say they have no actual plans. Those plans would emerge if and when both parties have agreed to all the details.

Had a conversation with a Rivian rep at the R2/R3 event in Denver last weekend. I asked one favor of R.J. which was it is OK for Rivian to share parts with VW, but for for the love of God, do not put VW parts in a Rivian.

He said not to worry, VW was interested in their software and drive component architecture, not the other way around. Who knows, maybe there will be a revival of the Super Beetle

Yup. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some type of manufacturing partnership down the road, especially with VW's experience with volume. Look how long this latest JV was kept secret, it's obvious there are many other juicy details under wraps right now :)

I thought it was pretty clear that the JV is for the creation of the ECUs running Rivian firmware and zonal architecture that they comprise, nothing to do with finished vehicles or assembly..? How is this surprising? The upside for VW is that they get under the hood components that work, the upside for Rivian is that they get to buy their ECUs at rock bottom prices because they can bulk-buy 50k for themselves with VW putting in an order for 250k at the same time. It’s not a partnership for manufacturing vehicles at all.

I don't like VWs. Lot of people don't. Everyone has their reasons, but I don't want future Rivian's to be a badge engineered VW ID(X) for several times the VW price.

Rivian must really need money if they’re willing to dilute their engineering focus on a joint venture. That, or the promise of shared parts helping margin is too good to ignore.

Yes they do need money. Dont think they are diluting their engineering focus. VW has plenty of engineers.
