So, I left the comfort of my home this morning at 5:30 am to go to work. It was not raining nor was it windy, from what I could tell it was going to be a normal drive into work. (I live next to DFW airport and work in Carrollton). So I hop on 121 and drive north, first thing I see is lightning, I was not expecting any rain this morning. We had a really strong thunderstorm hit us Monday evening, I honestly thought the storms had passed. Of course the further I got north the worse it got. I should have turned around and gone back home, but I was already in it. Rain was blowing sideways, gusting wind up to 70+. It was stupid to be in. There were a few other cars on the road, I actually saw another Rivian in my mirror for a while. I hope whoever it was got where they were going safely.

Anyway, the R1T drove awesomely, I was super impressed with how it handled the crazy wind and rain. I used to drive a Wrangler that would get blown all over the place. The Rivian was rock solid. I wouldn’t want to venture into that situation again, but am glad to know that my R1T can handle it if necessary. I attached a quick video I was able to capture while driving. Thanks for listening to my adventure.

Glad you are safe. That lightning strike you caught on the cam looked too close for comfort.

Whoa… intense, and glad you’re safe to share the adventure. I suppose the stability is reinforced by the low center of gravity (battery pack below you) and the 7000lbs of the vehicle. Just please don’t try to become a storm chaser… wouldn’t want you to play chicken with a tornado, or get the paint scratched. ??

On a side note, I do wish the cameras on the R1’s were higher quality.

I agree with you that the R1T handles well in cross winds. I thought it might just be because of the weight but then we got another E.V. (Volvo XC40 recharge). That gets pushed around much more by the wind.

I had a similar experience where I got caught in a derecho coming home from grabbing takeout. 60 mph gusts, hail, whiteout sheets of rain.

The Rivian did great. Only thing I was worried about was the hail damage but it was small and I didn't have a dent or ding.

So that's what I slept through! ? Only a couple roars of thunder partially woke me up, but then I went back to sleep. I'm right by DFW airport too. I saw all the damage to so many of the trees in my neighborhood after waking up and finally stepping outside. I don't think anyone here was expecting that storm and definitely not to hit that hard. ? Just the night before, my house got 30 minutes of non-stop hail (pea size), so an even worse storm just hours later was not even a thought to me. Glad to see I'll be safe if I get caught in one with a Rivian!

Same here. I live by the airport as well going east 635 to work. The R1s is handling it like a champ. It is scary still and I should have pull over the side of the road with that crazy strong wind and rain. Shitty thing is when I got to work, the power is out on our buidling so I have to drive back home.

You’re right about that, I was very happy the truck weighs so much.

I saw the news about how bad Houston got hit really bad. Crazy storms. May become the new norm for May in Texas.

I was positive it was going to drive into hail or a tornado. Lucky me, just straight line winds and rain.

Glad you made it through OK, and without picking up any scratches or dents! The power of Mother Nature can be impressive!

My R1S made it through that Dallas storm’s insane winds, ran into them going to the gym.
Impressively stable, no issues.

it really shined later that morning…
