I got the update late last week and my impression is that it is a bit of a mixed bag.

It seems to have introduced a lot of small bugs along with the planned improvements. None of the "bugs" are huge but they are annoying (e. g., changes to map settings, problems with the infotainment system). Though not mentioned in the update notes, it seems that this release has also changed the accelerator mapping when in reverse, for the better in this case.

Looking forward to the first update of 2025 that will [hopefully] have the long promised change allowing user selection of wheel/tire size.

What version did you update from? Sounds like you may not have received 2024.51.1, the reverse mapping was in there and for some reason they left out the update notes from 2024.51.1 when releasing 2024.51.2.

Edit, here is a good summary of 2024.51

Has anyone gotten a notification yet with the new update that preemptively warned about range impacted by cold weather?
Nope and i’ve had it since thursday with 5 degree temps…lots of snow too.
Ditto. Including trip to the mountain this weekend.
It showed up for me today for the first time:

Rivian R1T R1S 2024.51.02 Update installing now Screenshot_20250210-125113

At lunch the battery was 32* so I tried manually starting climate conditioning and after 30 minutes the cabin was warm but the battery and motor temps did not budge. Given the text in the screen shot I didn't expect this to work but I don't drive on a regular schedule and wanted to try it.

I set a climate schedule for 3:30pm so we'll see how that goes. Currently unplugged.

Is this the "clunking" or popping noise that I've been hearing sporadically the last couple months; when engaging reverse?
After 2025.51 update in late January, the rear motor engages much more violently when cruising at highway speeds in All-purpose. It used to be butter smooth from 0 to 112 mph with no discernible indication that the rear motor engaged. Now, it thumps into action when the throttle is hit and the rear motor engages.

Not an issue until that update changed the way All-Purpose functions.

My battery and motor temps actually went down from 32 to 26 between climate conditioning over lunch and my scheduled preconditioning for a 3:30pm departure. Im gonna charge up a bit and try to schedule preconditioning while plugged in the morning, but I don't expect it to work any better.

  • Improved thermal system behavior in cold weather.
Has anyone noticed any change since the hotfix? Maybe I need to try a hard reset. Maybe I'm reading into this line item too much?

Wow I knew something was different but I couldn't quite put my finger on what. This is the first I've hard of this but I think that's been the issue for me, thanks for the explanation!

Send a request into Rivian and help get this reverted back. At least a few other users here have service center appointments due to it.....so more than likely Rivian is aware that we hate it.

I'd bet they changed the threshold for how long all-purpose keeps the rear motor off in an effort to cut down energy usage.

I'd rather have 1 to 3% less range and a smooth all-purpose versus the garbage we have now.

Use Snow Mode to keep the rear motor engaged until they revert it back.
