Anyone who is having a 5 tire rotation done take a second to give a heads up to who ever is doing it that they need to remove the spare BEFORE jacking up the truck I'd even go to the point to tell them to get IN the truck bed to pull out.
I had Discount Tire do a 5 tire rotation and lets just say they tried to pull the spare out WHILE in jack mode and did a number on my rims. It comes from trying to lift the tire out at a 45 degree angle. The spare tub has a metal plate + 4 screws that can do a number on your rims.
Back story - Had a 5 tire rotation done, everything went fine, 1st problem - I didn't walk around the truck to check rims etc. A few weeks later I was walking out of my parents and just looked at my Passenger Front rim and said "W-T-F!?!?" Right away I was trying to think of I ran over something, asked the wife if she ran over anything. We both came to the conclusion that it had to be Discount, sadly since it had been so long we doubted they'd do anything. Not the end of the world, just something that I said, "well I didn't check and it took me forever to notice, my bad".
Made a call to Rivian and ordered a new rim, $760.58, it'll be here in a few weeks, no big deal.
Fast forward to 2 Friday's ago, wonderful a nail in a tire with it losing air pretty quick. Figure since it was so close I ran over to another Discount Tire to get it swapped out. Thankfully one of the guys I know transferred from my normal shop, he checked me in pretty quick and got a tech to change the tire out. While waiting he walked up and said "hey man your spare rim is scratch pretty bad, wanted you to know about. His tech claimed he just pulled it out and didn't scratch but felt it was done before hand.
At this point I'm not really happy but also wanted to give the benefit of doubt. I get the spare changed and just have them put the bad tire in the bed.
Get home and start to really look at what is going on, after looking at the spare holder tub I was pretty sure I understood what was going on. The techs are trying to pull out / put in the spare tires at a 45 degree angle and just scratching the hell out of the wheels.
Now that I have 2 rims scratched to hell and back I started to look at possible shops to "fix" or at least make them not look like crap. Thankfully Alloy Wheel Works said they'd give it a try and was pretty sure for $185 they could make it look like it never happened. Told them I'd bring by the truck after getting new tires (nail almost at side wall + tires just under 4/32 depth).
Show up at my normal Discount Tire shop and immediately a rep I know walks out and says hi, asks how the truck has been, when I'm getting my new F350 etc. We chat for a little while talking about the new tires, trucks etc. Once we're done and about to go inside I just said, "Hey I want to bring to your attention that your guys need to be careful about getting these spares out of the truck, it seems and I don't know this for sure, but I'm pretty sure it's happening when they'll pull the spare out while standing on the ground. We walk over and look at one of the rims, then the other plus the inside of the spare tub. He calls over the manager and tells him what I said, he does a walk around and says, "man I think your right on that, not a problem we'll get it taken care of". SHOCKED, like jaw on ground shocked. He asked me where I was going to get them fixed and just says alright cool let me know.
To be honest my first thought was, yeah right, I'll get them fixed and you'll tell me to buzz off. Well by the time my truck was done he walks up and says, "I've got a claim opened, you should be getting an email / call in the next few days" The next day I get a text from Alloy Wheel Works (I shared photos with him of the rims) - He says the manager at Discount called him, sent him the insurance claim information and wanted to confirm a date to get my truck in to get repaired. O_O The dude remember the place, followed up with the claim and ensured that Alloy knew NOT to charge me.
