@screamingkarts has created a document to help collect affected VINS with AC N/V/H issues. We will use this to get information back to Rivian. I have already sent this link in with my service ticket and other forum members are in close contact with executives on this issue. Please add you car to this form.

As we get into the triple digits temperature this summer, the AC system in Rivians will be screaming for their dear life. Here is a video of the compressor at full load trying to cool the car down. The N/V/H heard and felt can be mind numbing and also physically numbing to your feet from the vibration in the pedals / floor pan.

@Friscorays is tracking 50+ threads reporting similar N/V/H issues with the AC compressor.

Rivian will tell you it’s normal and working as designed.

The noise / vibration / harshness needs some sort of fix / campaign similar to 2015 Tesla Model Y cover shown below.

An acoustic cover over the compressor plus some better mounting points with rubber isolation along with a software fix to slowly ramp it up will help a lot.

Also a better ambient temperature sensor that doesn’t read 10 degrees higher because of the location of the sensor and dark paint.

Thanks!

Any correlation to vin (can’t fill the form as our truck is in service)?. Would also be nice to know what fraction of folks don’t have the issue at all.

At the risk of being Captain Obvious, everyone should remember that these results will likely be skewed towards the "I have this problem too" results, perhaps quite a bit. Why? People looking for more information about this problem will come here, some will be new members at RivianForums.com for that sole reason. People who are not RivianForums.com members and don't have this problem will likely never come here at all....

So 26 vehicles. THey should fix this for y'all but doesn't sound too widespread.

The count went from 26 this morning to 40. Just let the new update roll out and temps grind up to 100 degrees. The count will double or triple.

Yes. 9621. I have a ticket in for July 31st. The new SW update helped with the erroneous wake up over-ramp up and down but didn’t help with the overall noise and vibration of it running at full tilt here in Austin in 100+ temps. It’s very embarrassing to have a high end EV sitting in a school line or parking lot and it’s screaming outside and everyone is looking at you with their quiet ICE vehicles. I even had someone make a comment “I thought those electric cars are supposed to be quiet?” I just laughed and tried to play it off but was quite embarrassing. Something needs to be done.

For sure this is an issue. Never heard a AC making this noice before especially on an expensive EV that should be whisper quite!

I was maybe getting slight vibration that I could feel in the accelerator pedal, but the larger issue was the AC completely quit putting out cold air when the outside temp was above 85F. My R1T is currently at the Sacramento SC. They are replacing the compressor.

I hope to pick it up Saturday and we'll see how well it works after that.

Interesting posts….for those early Tesla Model Y adopters like myself we endured a very similar battle. It started on a forum like this and eventually gained enough traction to prompt a fix. Here is the familiar back story if interested

I take ownership of R1S tomorrow and know I’m asking for some early adopter blues. It’s envitable but honestly kind of fun. First world problems that allows you to build a community like this and a nice distraction from real life drama.
I will end up cutting my own shroud if needed and will report back. As a Tesla owner as well it’s makes life easier to take a few problems in to your own hands and find a solution.
Side note for my first post here …im excited to see @jebinc posts if your out there …I enjoyed his commentary on the tesla forums.

Also subscribed. I had that sound and vibration in the accelerator pedal back in April when navigating to a DCFC (2nd time going to one at that point). It was my first time hearing that sound. Didn't hear it again until my next time again navigating to a fast charger, at the beginning of the month I did a cross country drive from PA to CA...about the time I got to Kansas/CO the noise no longer was happening, almost as if whatever was rubbing got "worn in" I'll try really cranking the AC over the next couple days and see if I can replicate it. I didn't think it was the compressor, but rather a battery cooling fan, but it sounded very similar.

Hello! I am here! I own R1T and absolutely love ❤ it! Zero issues or complaints! I posted nearly 10 “Jebinc’s…” mod and product review posts here, check them out. And do consider getting running boards or sliders for your new rig!

Re the MY issue; they fixed that because it’s a high volume/high market visibility model. They have done squat to fix the vibration in the Model S/X low volume models…. I have a vibrating Plaid as well…

Here’s one of the “Jebinc’s” review of the @EV Sportline running boards!

While that number has already climbed to at least 40, keep in mind that the number of forum members is fairly small. A quick count puts the number at just under 1,200, with not all being active. Let's make the math simple and say it's an even 1,000. That means that at least 40 of every 1,000 vehicles may be affected. Your odds of having the issue are at least 4%, not a huge number but definitely non-trivial. The number is almost certainly under-reported, so the real value is likely to be somewhat higher.

Bottom line is that Rivian needs to recognize the problem and fix it before it becomes a pop culture bogeyman, like EV battery fires (which occur at a far, far lower rate) already are.
