I managed to melt one of the pins in the Tesla adapter and the handle to my Rivian Wall Charger. I contacted service about buying either a new cord/handle or handle. My guide got back to me stating that they are currently not supplying individual parts to service the wall charger.

Rivian R1T R1S PSA! Rivian doesn't recommend using a Tesla adapter with Rivian Wall Charger... it melted my pin IMG_4671

Which Tesla adapter did you use?

Oh wait, it would have been the one that comes with Teslas, doh.

That's skinks. I've had no issues using an adapter on my Tesla charger to charge multiple cars including my Rivian.

Good PSA. I do have the Rivian EVSE, but I use a separate Tesla Wall Connector for my Tesla.

It is interesting because that Tesla J1772 adapter has been around for like 10 years and I’ve never heard of anything like this happening. Were you charging at 48A?

Edit, not that it should matter, the website says the adapter is rated for 80A.

So, a simple bad batch error, or is the Rivian WC not using a fully standard charging handle?

Should have bought a Tesla wall connector and use tap for Rivian? That’s my plan.
I had two J1772 chargers set up. One for my wife's e-Tron GT and the Rivian for my R1T. I've since replaced one of them with a Gen3 Tesla wall Charger that I had from my previous Model Y.

Doesn't really make sense to me unless one was slightly faulty.

I would have thought so too. The Rivian Charger has had hundreds of hours of charging on the Rivian, e-Tron, and Bolt with no issues. Folks on Tesla forums have reported the same happening to them at J1772 chargers.

I'm a bit tired of EV manfs selling things with no service, no parts, slow or no repairs, slow or no collision parts …

Tesla now offers a wall connector with J1772 built in, so no adapter needed for use on the Rivian. I'd have bought that instead of the Rivian wall charger had Tesla offered it sooner.

Whats the benefit of using a Tesla j1772 charger for a Rivian vs using a Rivian j1772 charger or a normal Tesla charger with j1772 adapter? I currently use Tesla charger with j1772 adapter and works great.

Pro:
- Costs less than the Rivian one.
- Can communicate if you have the right models to load share with multiple chargers.

For me, I have the 2nd Gen That load shares, so I just use an adapter. I’ll eventually replace the Tesla cord with a J1772 cord.

This is weird, I'm going to have to take my adapter off the Tesla J1772 wall connector I have and make sure it's OK. We bought two older Gen 2 wall connectors (with simple load sharing) so we could charge two vehicles at once on a single circuit.

Since we still have the Tesla, I just bought an extra J1772 adapter and taped it onto the end. We're planning on replacing the Tesla with an R1S this year, so hopefully it's moot soon.

If you have a Tesla and a Rivian, but only plan on having one charger, it makes sense to have the regular Tesla wall connector with a J1772 adapter. And if you already have a regular Tesla wall connector installed it's just fine to add the J1772 adapter. But if you have room for a dedicated charger for the Rivian and haven't installed a charger yet, I think the Tesla J1772 is superior to the Rivian Wall Charger because the Tesla cable is much thinner and easier to work with. The cable on the Rivian charger is really bulky and heavy by comparison. (I've got a regular Tesla wall connector and a Rivian charger installed in our garage. The Tesla J1772 wasn't available when I installed the Rivian charger.)
