  1. What manner of sorcery is this? Cybertruck FSD Video

I’ve twice used FSD 12.4 in my neighbor’s Model Y and had to disengage it at least once on an 8km route. Haven’t used 12.5 yet. I have had Enhanced Auto Pilot on my Model X and 3 for 7-8 years and use it constantly on highways and roads with no cross traffic. It is very good, makes driving more...
  2. NY Times Interview: The Road Ahead for E.V.s with RJ Scaringe [9/25/24]

Agreed, and my response to you was taking that into consideration. I am sure that before the Supercharger network became available to Rivian owners (at least part of the network, not all of it) charging on road trips was a challenge. I am a long time Tesla owner (4 different models) but I...
  3. NY Times Interview: The Road Ahead for E.V.s with RJ Scaringe [9/25/24]

Agree on the EV misinformation problem, and yes EVs aren’t yet below $30K, but disagree on your charging infrastructure characterization. There are tens of thousands of DC chargers in North America. I’ve done tens of thousands of miles EV roadtripping all over the Western US and Canada and...
  4. First Tow with New 2025 R1S Gen2

I’m also interested in a comparison of the Model Y energy usage while you are towing vs the R1S, on comparable roads of course. Your new Rivian looks great! What motor configuration and pack size did you get?
  5. Towing stats: 3650 miles, total miles just under 4400 miles (2023 R1T DM Max pack w/ 2020 Airstream Basecamp 16X)

If you are considering the R-series Altos because you think they will require less energy to tow compared to the F-series models, based on my research over the years I can tell you that they do not reduce energy usage. Apparently their sharply tapered shape with the roof down actually works...
  6. Towing stats: 3650 miles, total miles just under 4400 miles (2023 R1T DM Max pack w/ 2020 Airstream Basecamp 16X)

That is a nice feature that Tesla has never bothered to implement because fundamentally the company has never really focused on improving the towing experience. It’s an afterthought to Tesla, in my opinion. Towing my Alto F1743 I get about 550-600Wh/m at 60mph (level dry road, no headwind). The...
  7. Towing stats: 3650 miles, total miles just under 4400 miles (2023 R1T DM Max pack w/ 2020 Airstream Basecamp 16X)

Rolf, thanks for your post. I’m not a Rivian owner yet, I currently tow with a Tesla. I’m trying to understand the data shown in your first photo. Is the 1.41m/kWh the energy usage on your trip while towing? That converts to 709Wh/m which is the way Tesla displays energy numbers. You tow at...
  8. Towing a 17ft/2,200lb RV trailer with a Tesla Model X; reasons why an R1S could be a better tow vehicle

Thanks. So it hits 404kW and in a matter of seconds drops down to about 350kW and then continues to rapidly taper such that in about 5(?) minutes it is at 250kW. I’m a bit surprised that Rivian has not yet improved it’s pack cooling capability.
  9. Towing a 17ft/2,200lb RV trailer with a Tesla Model X; reasons why an R1S could be a better tow vehicle

The Cybertruck Battery is 800V. I was not aware that it could start charging at 400kW (your source is?) and in any case even 350kW capable chargers are not exactly widespread, though of course they do exist. I have seen reports of 255kW as the max charge rate.
  10. Towing a 17ft/2,200lb RV trailer with a Tesla Model X; reasons why an R1S could be a better tow vehicle

Had a demo drive in an R1S Dual Motor (Gen1), my first time in a Rivian so first time driving one. Very impressed! Beautiful fit and finish, very smooth ride, good handling with an amazingly tight turning radius, comfortable seats, super useful 360 top down display when parking, plenty of power...
  11. Towing a 17ft/2,200lb RV trailer with a Tesla Model X; reasons why an R1S could be a better tow vehicle

@SwampNut wrote: “They haven't even hinted at that, at all. Much less promised it.” On the Rivian website at https://rivian.com/r1s in the “Autonomy” section it states: Lane Change on Command coming summer 2024 Enhanced Highway Assist expected late 2024 Driving Comfort Assist expected 2025...
  12. Towing a 17ft/2,200lb RV trailer with a Tesla Model X; reasons why an R1S could be a better tow vehicle

Hi @Zoomit and good to see you here! Sorry for my slow reply to your very useful post, I appreciate it. That is very encouraging, thanks. Great, thanks for confirming my hunch. If Rivian enables their Adaptive Cruise Control to work while towing, and if they make the promised improvements to...
  13. R2 Charge Port Location is Moving to Driver's Side Rear (on Production Model)! - Confirms Rivian VP

”Not necessary with an ICE”? This is a Rivian forum, we are talking about EVs here. I unhitch to charge because Tesla Superchargers are not configured with long pull through stalls that allow charging when hitched. Yes, it is 5 minutes to unhitch/hitch. I don’t care. If you Never had a...
  14. R2 Charge Port Location is Moving to Driver's Side Rear (on Production Model)! - Confirms Rivian VP

Of course you are correct. But with the exception of the rather limited Rivian Adventure charging network (and I’m glad they are building it and expanding it!*) all other charging networks are built for all EVs, and so far have not put any significant effort into making charging while hitched...
  15. R2 Charge Port Location is Moving to Driver's Side Rear (on Production Model)! - Confirms Rivian VP

I’ve been towing my RV trailer for over 6 years and many thousands of miles in the western US and British Columbia using the Supercharger network, which is by far the largest and most reliable charging network in North America, and for me I want a charge port location that is most compatible...
  16. R2 Charge Port Location is Moving to Driver's Side Rear (on Production Model)! - Confirms Rivian VP

His post stated “production R2”. That decision by Rivian is clearly the right move because it makes using the Tesla Supercharger network much easier. It is unfortunate that Rivian decided to put the charge port in the front on the R1 models. But I don’t expect them to change that now. It made...
  17. Towing a 17ft/2,200lb RV trailer with a Tesla Model X; reasons why an R1S could be a better tow vehicle

Thanks! Good to know, but given my towing history and the range of that pack I doubt I will encounter that scenario. When driving, towing or not, my wife and I like to take regular breaks and get out and stretch every 90 minutes or less. A charging session is the perfect opportunity to do that...
  18. Towing a 17ft/2,200lb RV trailer with a Tesla Model X; reasons why an R1S could be a better tow vehicle

Thanks for your comment. If you are at a DC charger that can deliver up to 250kW and start charging at 10%, what charge rate does the vehicle typically display and what does it drop to at 80%?
  19. Towing a 17ft/2,200lb RV trailer with a Tesla Model X; reasons why an R1S could be a better tow vehicle

Thanks. I tow at 55 and suspect the added range of the Max will be more significant.
