  1. Rivian curious life-long cheapskate....what to look for in a USED R1T

Welcome! I hope to keep my Rivian like you've kept your ridgeline. I don't think there's any one thing to look out for. Read a little about the differences between Gen 1 and Gen 2 vehicles. There are reasons people prefer one over the other which are more related to personal preferences than...
  2. IONNA Experience

Agreed. I tried my first Ionna station a few weeks back. The pricing was reasonable, I didn't have to deal with Tesla /EA membership pricing nonsense, and the shade structure was nice. Most of my complaints with other networks have gone away over the last few years, so it's not like Ionna =...
  3. Rivian and Redwood Materials partner to re-use Rivian batteries at Normal plant

Many "totaled" Rivian's on this forum have an undamaged battery pack. They can't sell the battery as new, but they can repurpose it.
  4. 2026.07 Software Update notes - features & fixes coming

It's a great trip! Just pay attention to when the road is open before you plan anything. The road to the top has been closed for a while, and I think is just re-opening sometime this summer. I'm heading to Lassen and the Northern CA redwoods this summer.
  5. 2026.07 Software Update notes - features & fixes coming

Yep, totally wiped. This bothers me more than it should. I had both Death Valley & Mount Blue Sky in mine, which are the highest and lowest drivable points in the US. The whole family thought that was pretty cool.
  6. The Next Challenge for Software Defined Vehicles:Hardware Generations

There's a couple components of this that will be interesting to see how they evolve. At some point software updates will stop for each generation of vehicle. I forgot what point it was that Tesla stopped updating early Model S cars, but I feel like it was in the 5-8 year range. I don't think...
  7. Overland Systems 270 degree awning installed

That looks really good! How easy/hard is taking the canopy on & off? I'm thinking of getting a somewhat smaller one. I'd be mounting one on my new fancy Go Fast, but I don't want to be driving around with it year-round. I'd be taking it on and off a few times a year at least. Sometimes solo.
  8. As you might have guessed.... higher gas prices has increased interest in EVs [ADMIN WARNING: NO POLITICS]

I remember seeing a chart of the supply/demand curve on oil. It was put together by the IEA or a similar agency IIRC. Essentially, oil below $70/barrel creates supply destruction. Prices above $120/barrel are where sustained demand destruction starts happening. Prices between those ranges...
  9. lost small snake in seat back

As a ball python owner, I sympathize. Those things find hidey-holes you can't imagine existing. Honestly, even if you get the seat back off, it will still probably be hiding somewhere you can't see it. There's about zero things you can do to lure it out until it gets hungry. These snakes...
  10. Weird compass question

Being near big metal objects is known to reduce the accuracy / functionality of magnetic compasses. On top of being a big metal object, an EV is a giant ball of various magnets & electromagnetic fields. I've never thought to test it, but I wouldn't call your experience surprising.
  11. As you might have guessed.... higher gas prices has increased interest in EVs [ADMIN WARNING: NO POLITICS]

You're right. Adding circuit breakers to rental properties is way too hard for modern society to manage. I don't think that problem will ever be solved. It's not like housing stock didn't have expectations of running water, sewage air conditioning, gas or electric cooking, washing machines...
  12. Current charging costs?

I just finished an 1,134 mile round trip and used 539kWh of electricity per the odometer. I left home with a 100% charge, and pulled back in with 12% remaining on the battery. I spent $229 on public charging, for a blended rate of $0.19/mile. The process of applying my EA pass membership was...
  13. R1T Owners: Would a Tailgate Mat Be Useful?

I responded earlier, but I will revise my answer to a "yes". I just acquired a GoFast camper, and something to make the tailgate easier on the knees for ingress/egress is something I would look for.
  14. As you might have guessed.... higher gas prices has increased interest in EVs [ADMIN WARNING: NO POLITICS]

I just saw an article about the EV market in places like the Philippines going bonkers. It sounds like demand for BYD is off the charts there. I suspect there's a big difference in places more exposed to gulf oil, and in places where gas expense is a larger portion of typical incomes. It also...
  15. "Rivian has identified your R1 may be at risk of experiencing a 12-volt battery failure."

I had this same message about a year ago. Mobile service came out and replaced it in a few minutes. I'm grateful that Rivian was able to be proactive about it. That's pretty rare for any company.
  16. Rivian sacrifices 2027 profit goal to push deeper into autonomy

Techcrunch isn't always a great source, but the article linked directly to an SEC filing where Rivian adjusted their 2027 EBITDA guidance. Here's a direct link to avoid the Techcrunch grossness. See item 7.01 https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1874178/000110465926031794/tm269292d1_8k.htm
  17. Uber & Rivian Announce Autonomous R2 Robotaxi Partnership (w/ 1.25 Billion Investment)

I previously made some posts that were highly skeptical of Rivian's business logic on autonomy. I take those comments back. A partnership like this makes the effort worth it. Capital is coming into the company to pay for a chunk of the very expensive development effort and the incremental...
  18. Upgrade from 50 to 60 amp circuit to get to 48 amps of charging? Have 2 EVs.

I think you'll be fine with a single 50amp breaker. We have a Rivian and a Tesla running from a single 14-50 outlet. We're using the Grizzl-E duo charger plugged into that outlet. They also have a hardwired option IIRC. Over the last few years there hasn't been a time where we felt like we...
  19. A good time to own an EV - Gas Prices about to go nuts [LOCKED DUE TO POLITICS]

That is a fair point. It's not a law. But Milton Friedman's idea's are functionally a religion among corporate leadership and the buyside + sellside of corporate leadership, and it seems pretty well established in shareholder lawsuits. My challenge to those disagreeing with the broader...
  20. A good time to own an EV - Gas Prices about to go nuts [LOCKED DUE TO POLITICS]

There's room for flexibility in maximizing shareholder returns. It doesn't always mean lowest cost, and Amazon's climate pledge's are inline with fiduciary duties. Bigger picture, there's also zero question that Amazon is ruthlessly focused on the bottom line at the expense of the environment...
