Rivian partners with ALLDATA to expand repair service

Rivian has partnered with ALLDATA to make its official repair and diagnostic information available to independent repair shops nationwide. ALLDATA becomes the first third party provider to offer Rivian’s OEM service data, giving technicians access to the same repair procedures, maintenance info, and diagnostics used by Rivian service centers.​

For owners, this is a meaningful step forward. Rivian’s service network continues to expand, but opening factory repair data to independent shops helps reduce wait times and gives more locations the ability to properly service Rivian vehicles, especially for collision and mechanical repairs.​

When might this happen? Sounds great but I expect many of the procedures will begin with “connect vehicle to RiDE software” which is super expensive I think.

Alldata was a good choice. They charge a reasonable amount to diyers. I paid for service manuals for my Bolt EV, and the quality was really good.

Good to hear you found the resource useful. How’s the bolt to Rivian transition been? I’ve got a bolt with 90k miles and like to DIY stuff when I can. The bolt has been pretty much trouble free. I’m accepting the Rivian in a few weeks, but part of me is going to miss the little hatchback.

This is fantastic news for those of us who like to do our own wrenching. Yes, I won't be using it until my warranty runs out. But this gets rid of one concern I had about keeping the truck long term. Having an option outside of the factory service center (read $$$$) is a good thing.

This should also take some load off of the existing factory service system which by all accounts is always very booked up.

The next question becomes, if you are doing your own work and have the proper guides through this service, how do you acquire parts? Right now the parts portal is locked behind a login that who knows how to get....

Those independent shops probably still have to acquire parts though Rivian's portal. And DIY'ers through their SC. And I'm pretty sure there will be disclaimers/waivers stating outcome of those [non-factory] repairs are not Rivian's responsibility... even if instructions are followed to the T.

That is another hurdle to be crossed, for sure. But access to the guides and the vehicle computers brings us one step closer to the ultimate goal of fixing your vehicle yourself. I wouldn't bet on the current situation of lack of access to parts lasting forever.

I don't know the status of this, but I believe most Rivians sold are still under warranty. But the very first Rivians must be nearing the end of their warranty period, if they are not out of it already. As I mentioned before, letting others fix them will take some load off of the service center system.

As far as non-factory repairs not being the factory's problem, that is pretty much the auto industry position and has been for a very long time. The only exception is if the component you buy from the factory is defective and then they are only responsible for replacing the defective part.

And if anything, a little more transparency for consumers... if they chose to spend the $ for access; since there's no consumer facing repair manual.

Thats probably true, especially for Gen1 with the 17 ECUs, but AllData access should include the access to the RiDE as well, or a "lite" version at least.

The Rivian service information is only seemingly available to the professional subscribers and not the cheaper, consumer oriented AllDataDIY.

I'm starting to form the opinion that Rivian hates its customers deep down.

AllData confirmed this. I'm asking them if there is a timeline to the data going to AllDataDIY.
