Love the idea of a mini pickup. They need to offer a single cab version tho! Get rid of the weird dent? And add a small frunk so people don't crush their legs.

I mean, lose the frunk and the gear tunnel and the Rivian would probably have an 8 ft bed. But even calling this thing's bed 5 ft isn't really accurate when they slope it behind the rear seats like that.

According to the website, you can sacrifice the back seat to hold a 4x8 in the bed with the tailgate up.

Eh… Hyundai Santa Cruz, Ford Maverick exist. As did Subaru Baja, BRAT, Chevy El Camino, etc.

And none of them are all electric like the Telo. I can see the Telo being a great city delivery vehicle where parking spaces are often tight.

Cool idea, but a VERY niche market - subcompact truck. Not sure why so many startups are focusing on a truck right now when the market is clearly demanding SUVs. Build the SUV, prove profitability, and then scale to niche vehicles. For as much as I love my T, I think Rivian would be in better shape right now had they focused on putting out the S first.

Perhaps, but I wouldn’t have purchased the R1S. I needed a truck for the open bed. Having owned a Ridgeline for 17 yrs, and not liking the current Honda design, I probably would have gone to a Tacoma.

In reality I'll end up with the R1S that I ordered so long ago. But in the abstract, I like this cutle little guy quite a bit, and I'll take a version of one as my DIY hauler and grocery-getter.

...In Orange, minus the dent, with the SUV/Van format but still able to haul a 4x8 sheet with the rear seat removed, with just 200HP, limited to 80mph, having a smallish 50KW battery and maybe 175 miles of optimistic range, and a price of $35K. And probably a real front bumper.

The mega-power, mega-battery, mega-range thing is just so wrong in a truck this small. Oh and save $100MM by not going for self-driving. Pivot before it's too late.

I think that side dent is graphics, here is a quote from the co founder "That's most of our special sauce! We are currently doing crash test simulations with a combination of traditional crumble zone + internal airbags and our own special safety tech we're working on with a global Tier 1 supplier, and are confident we'll be able to hit a 5-star occupant safety rating with our design. We'll have updates that go out about the safety tech as we go through homologation."

I'll go out on a (short) limb and predict that no matter what clever tricks/"special safety tech" they try that thing will not pass US frontal and offset crash tests which will lead to a total re-imagine/redesign or simply adding a short frunk to act as a buffer zone. Or they will get discouraged, run out of $$ and just fade into oblivion...
