it takes 2 tire set replacements, being on your 3rd set to make the initial $1k back... It's a moot point.

We don’t have vehicle inspections, so it’s just another excuse to road trip to Oregon (no sales tax) or Nevada (hit the blackjack tables until you win enough to pay for new tires) and install some new shoes.

That was my thought, but the Major tire companies have already said that it will impact other states as they will focus on making Ca compliant tires for all markets. I hope Rivian and other car companies rubber stamp tires as OEM.

I’ve never got into considering one size tire vs. another. However, the discussion re: the 20/21 inch tires has gotten my attention. I drive 90% city/rural driving in Rhode Island. I suspect that when I get my R2, I’ll be charging at home 99% of the time. While we have snow in Rhode Island, given we’re on the coast, more often than not the accumulation is limited. With the limited info I’ve provided, 20 or 21? Try not to make it complicated.

Definitely 20:
I’d only choose the 21s if you strongly prefer them aesthetically/on-road and are already comfortable buying a separate winter wheel/tire package. For now, 21s are a one trick pony.

Thanks for such a prompt reply. Given all the research you've posted, and in spite of some negative feedback, your creditability stands solid with me. I'm going with the 20"s. Gotta admit, the "one trick pony" made it uncomplicated.

None of this discussion matters in California now that the CEC passed the OEM tire rule. No matter what size you go with you won't be able to get non OEM options..

I highly recommend you go drive a demo car with 20's. I noticed a drone in the cabin you can't unhear with the 20's. Other have also mentioned this. Over time this will get worse with the 20's due to the tread wear. You can easily find a set of 20's with winter setup for = cost to spending the $1k.

This is incorrect. Only OEM tires will be available for sale, this means that if another variant is not listed as an OEM for another car they won't be for sale. Also, the exclusion for AT is 37's and above. So the R2 will not qualify for any exclusions. (Straight from the mouth of Dunlop CEO)

Two phases for the rubber to meet the road:

• Phase 1 would allow the sale of tires with a maximum rolling resistance level of 9.1 newtons per kilonewton (N/kN).
• Phase 2 would lower the standard to 7.2 (N/kN).

Any chinese tire you want could reformulate their tire and meet the efficiency standards though. So what does it matter if you lose crappy tires? Michelin, Bridgestone, and Hankook are all fine with this rule so the practical effect seems minimal and mostly far off since Phase 2 starts in 2033.

Sure doesn't look like a slam dunk that they're the same. Sure looks a lot like the Pirelli tires have a much more significant break in period than the AT tires.
