Yes, it is. But now Tesla will not sell a new one if you don't have a Tesla with Vin in the account. I have a buddy that is getting an R2 and tried to get the Tesla charger and The Tesla site said not available to non Tesla owners.

What I would say is that if you don't already have the Tesla charger from a prior EV, Its probably better to get the Rivian one so that its all-in-one app. I have Tesla solar and owned a Tesla prior so no big deal. But if I was starting fresh, I would get a Rivian one. Or I would get another brand that costs less while waiting for the Rivian V2G capability version, won't be cheap.

There are lots of options, just look for a charger with a J3400 connector.

This Emporia’s Pro is well rated, this Emporia is as well and a little cheaper. I have both of these at different locations and they work fine. Mine are J1772 connectors as I charge the R1S but use them for our Tesla and R2 with an adapter. The links above are ones that do not need an adapter for the R2.

Im in the same boat regarding L2 home charging. Fortunately, I have free charging at work so I can get by for a while before committing to anything.

I'm currently leaning toward adding a 14-50 outlet in my garage. I'll use the Tesla Mobile Charger I got on eBay with the 14-50 for 7.6kW charging unless/until I need more. I can then replace the plug with a hardwired EVSE and appropriate breaker. I plan to put the outlet on the other side of the same wall my exterior panel is on, so pulling new wires if necessary shouldn't be a problem, but I could also just oversize them initially. If I go this route, the Mobile Charger will be semi-permanently installed - I won't be plugging/unplugging it except for the occasional road trip.

Honestly, the difference between the 32A max from the mobile charger and 40A or 48A from a hardwired EVSE is not much. Both are more than enough for an overnight 0-70% charge.

I personally would not chance a used charger of any brand. Do you have a friend who has a Tesla who can order one for you? I’ll probably go with Charge Point. Rivian portable charger is another option more reasonably priced.

As long as use a quality 14-50 plug, the Tesla mobile connector is used by some owners I know as their only home charger. Seems to be good quality hardware. And I wouldn't buy anything right from Tesla at this point, so used is the way. Lots for sales used. Get get lightly used/'new' for about $210 at auction. Beats the $300 Tesla wants. I use a TeslaTap to get from NACS to J1772 plug with my Gen1 R1 and used Tesla Mobile has been flawless.

You can buy the Tesla charger in Best Buy. The portable charger should be just that, portable. Hardwired is a much safer solution.

A buddy of mine ( Tesla owner) gave me a brand new boxed Tesla 2 charger that he got when he bought when his wife got a Tesla. I am hearing mixed reviews saying this version wont work with the R2. ( handshake wont work, only for Tesla cars) and that I need the Tesla Universal or V3 charger. I am looking to see if anyone has the V2 Tesla charger and if it works on your R2.

Tesla is prioritizing Tesla customers due to supply shortages. If you have a friend with a
Tesla go that route. If you have another EV or plan to purchase one the Tesla charger is a good option. If not, just get the Rivian charger.

I have the Rivian charger and ChargePoint charger and recommend the ChargePoint as the option I would’ve gone with for both locations.

I have the Tesla Universal wall connector .. works great .. use it with R1 and R2 .. crazy now their site shows you must own a Tesla with a VIN
