R2 Rear Lift Gate Height Adjustment

It's hard to be precise, but I measured ~84.5" to the crest of the gate when it's open, back when we discussed this in early July at the link @emroch already shared: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/do-i-risk-damaging-the-lift-gate-motor.61172/

This is a very questionable decision by Rivian given cheaper cars offer height adjustment, but they also don't offer it on R1 so I don't see any OTA avenue here or they could have addressed it in the past few years. My hunch is that R1 is such a large vehicle, that it prevented people like me with smaller garages from purchasing it. So with R2, there seem to be quite a few people with smaller garages bringing this up as a concern and I hope Rivian hears the feedback from this new cohort.

It would have complicated my life almost daily and just not a headache I need - so I will not buy R2 until they offer this. I was given the opportunity to order R2 this week and it broke my heart to say no.

If they add this feature with the new chips/lidar refresh then I'm ordering right away. I did submit this to their customer service, but never heard anything back. As others have stated - the only way to change this is if everyone writes into Rivian and asks for it.

I am not an engineer - but if the door has the ability to stop because it hits something, I wonder via software if you could put in a timer and mimic pressure.

This is such a basic features on cars these days I dont even think they really list it on the dozens of features when you go look at tech specs on a car on a manufacture website. It is just like a thing these days, so its a big omission. I can likely use the frunk and lower the rear window for 90% of my use. my wife wants an R2 too but she is shorter, so the rear window going down isnt as much of a help. I am tall so I can reach in that way easier.

I chatted with someone. They believe it’s possible to address via software. It’s just a linear actuator and can be preset to change max extension to less than 100%.

You all should request it for future OTA via Rivian app > share feedback. It may even be on the development roadmap already. High amount of requests might elevate priority.

damn. Because of how my roll-up garage door works, I definitely need to stop the door. My Tesla has it set to a lower height at my home's specific location, but opens wide anywhere else. It's something I just assumed would be built in to the R2. Damn this will be annoying.

It is a strange miss - has Rivian ever gave a reason for it? It’s been an issue for years apparently.

Here is a temporary solution to prevent accidental damage. Way too easy to forget about “catching” the hatch before it hits the bottom of the garage door. Ask me how I know….luckily no damage

There are sensors to cut power when resistance is detected. But to your question… no one can answer because we don’t know specifics of materials used and threshold set for that sensor. Plus, how thorough the manufacturing QC is. Just hope if it does fail, it happens under warranty. And they don’t need to know what you’ve done… so they could claim failure is caused by the added strain you created. Might consider removing evidence.

This is merely a backup in case I forget or accidentally activate the opening function. Much rather deal with motor replacement than body damage.

I back into my garage with my R1S and have to stop the frunk if I need to get into it while in the garage. Don’t get in it all the time but 3.5 years and has not caused an issue.

Backing your R2 in would eliminate the overhead door getting in the way of your hatch opening.

I can’t back into the garage, there’s no space to access the hatch and my pup needs a ramp to get in sometimes.
