Yep, a working range is 150 miles between stops, this would not be great except that it will charge really quickly (maybe too quick for some)…
But really, its not that quick to charge. My old 2019 Model 3 Performance charged 10-80% in 24 min. My EV6 does it in less than 20 min and its a 2022. Kinda mediocre.

Car and Driver got 260 miles of range at 75 mph on the 21’s which is 5 mph faster than Out of Specs speed. This vehicle will be fine for longer trips.
C&D extrapolate from their test route. OOS was the most transparent and accurate because they drove the whole distance.

Just another data point. Tom over at SOC got 260 miles on the A/T's at 70 mph, his testing was not on an ideal route either and he didn't go until the vehicle died but did drive down to 1 percent.

If someone is in the Bay Area and wants to loan me an R2 for a day, I’ll do the driving test!
Unless you have $60K cash, not going to happen.

pretty much all of these real world usages are in wild disagreement with the 2.2 mi/kwh that OOS reported recently that upset everyone and it's honestly pretty fun to watch.

--

edit - I am conflating their 70mph and 80mph tests! the 2.2 was at 80mph.

the point remains that EPA highway testing is not done at 70mph. it never even reaches that speed at any point during the test. :)
Yowch that it would be fun to watch - we just put out numbers on the car that we ran in tests that we've been doing for years - nothing new here for R2 compared to other vehicles we've tested.

I've been watching all of these range reviews with great interest. As a first-time EV buyer, to say this is personally disappointing for me is an understatement. I’m waiting for my R2 number to be called next month, and these numbers certainly make me second guess my decision.

I have a long commute and tack on around 30,000 miles per year. We have long, cold winters here in my part of the country. There are just too many competitors with similar/better real world range, much lower cost, and trade-offs I could probably live with for me to give Rivian a pass on this. I love the Rivian looks, ethos, and what the brand stands for. However, I’m not sure the R2 holds up to the adventure-ready machine it was promised to be.

Maybe I’m overreacting, but my dreams of adventuring on extended trips out West definitely seem a little less achievable at the moment. Daily driving doesn't concern me in the least, but my road trip plans are slightly crushed.

I'm very bummed and not sure which direction I will go when my time comes.

Well I don’t know about that..

when I was deciding in early 2018 whether or not to take delivery of my Tm3LR order I chatted up some ppl around our house (there was a MS in every driveway and several M3 already by then) and asked if I could test drive it..

You show up with a 100K car, hand them the keys and show them a drivers license and you’d be surprised how many ppl will let you give it a spin around here. ;-)

Two friends/acquaintance right around here have orders, 1-2 Rivian already in the driveway, early orders and still don’t have an R2 yet, but they’re ready to do it when it arrives.

make sure to go for a test drive, it’s a really impressive vehicle at a fair pricepoint…it’s going to sell extremely well, if you have an opportunity to buy at current pricing it’s worth a thorough evaluation. If I didn’t have an R1S I’d buy one in a heartbeat. I think it is going to canabalize all the R1S…A <$60k R2 is going to make sense for >90%, the R2 is marginally smaller than the R1S, it will likely come down to needing the 7 seats (or not). While I love the R1S (Gen 1 and 2, equally), the R2 is sporty and much more fun/pleasant to drive…this is Rivians model 3 moment…

Which competitors with better range and much lower cost are you referring to?

If it's a spin, easier for you to book a test drive with Rivian. Not sure anyone else would let you do a long test drive no matter what your drive is.

If we're talking real world range compared to what we've seen so far from R2 reviews, I think there's arguments to be made for things like Ioniq 5, Model Y, and Equinox. Some range margins are slimmer than others, but they are all a substantial cost difference compared to my R2 LE desire. That's not even taking into account the used market.

Yes, all of these have their own tradeoffs (which I acknowledged), but that is my conundrum when I am comparing user experience vs. cost. At the end of the day, a car is a depreciating utility to me and there is a point of diminishing returns for my wallet, personally.

Sure you can buy cheaper ones but except MY, none of those are competitors to R2. And MY have similar cost.

I would argue that for first time EV buyers like me, they are certainly competitors. Maybe not in the sense that they are going head-to-head with enthusiasts. I want to love the R2 and I'm hoping I can get over my anxiety of spending upwards of $60K on something I will regret later.
