In a recent live stream, Riviantrackr said they use a cartridge based system in the paint shop in Normal so they can paint every other car a different color. He saw a wide mix of colors when he toured the factory which is why he asked on the tour.

Just passing this along as I thought it was interesting trivia as most of us are used to hearing about cars being painted in batches.

Thanks, but this is well-known - they've been doing this from the beginning.

Here's a video of RJ showing off the factory, from 2022. The part about the paint shop is at 2 minutes in, but the whole thing is worth a watch and is still pretty relevant.

Yeah, ancient history to those of us that have been following Rivian in detail from the start. R2 is bringing in a whole new freshman class so-to-speak so lots of cool things about Rivian for them to re-discover.

Always has been. They still paint in batches because it's still more efficient.

A lot of the "batching" in early R1 production was because of the wheels and all the supply chain disruptions that affected them, not because of paint color. But yes it makes sense to do a bunch of the same color at the same time regardless, because that way there is less of a chance for assembly errors to happen. Just because they CAN switch out colors every other car doesn't mean they SHOULD.

I always wanted a paint to sample option

I just finished a paint to sample complete for a Sema build .

They don't ask how much, they want it done

Note
All abs plastic trim was hydrodipped
