Oh damn I just realized this test was done when it was 98 degrees outside and they set the temperature to 68 degrees auto (22:32 mark)! Ok I feel better about this now actually. They used a ton of power on HVAC in this test.

Yeah, but, f*** not being comfortable in your vehicle. I'm not going to pay $65K and drive around in 100° weather with the AC off or set to 80° just to get another 10 miles of range

I mean, sure, 68° is a touch on the cool side, but having to factor in every single little common use scenario for a granular data analysis is just tedious.

Is 200-250 miles (give or take whatever), between charges, given all the other positive attributes of the R2 - plenty enough to make the vehicle worth purchasing? Or is all this just mathsturbation to prop up not really ever being serious about an R2 ...

Was not my experience during 3 years of ownership. I frequently made a 145 mile trip at 80 mph (starting with full charge) and would typically arrive at my destination with 23 - 28% battery level (depending on wind). I would never take the Tesla on this trip if it was cold outside.

One of my use case drive metrics, is Home in ~ San Carlos to Kettleman City (major SC) which is 192 miles, up hills and down hills and a lot of high speed on 101 and I5 (83-85 stretches) overall avg 72-75 mph start to finish.. I could get to Kettleman with 18-25% SOC (50-60 on the remaining miles), in winter as well With climate at 68-70.

That was my bladder limit after having some morning coffee and then it was 1-2x legs of 120-150 to get to destination (8-10 min stops). So if I can repeat that sort of drive experience with an R2, it will probably be fine for those 3-4x per year use cases.

I'll be interested to see how the r2 standard and standard rwd long range as well as premium does in the 70mph range test.

I wouldn't think the result would be that much different. Still the same brick shape, still the same-ish weight, and R2 Performance was already tested in Conserve mode, which would have been RWD IIRC.

After looking at why such a difference, I came upon this. It makes sense now that the tests that the EPA uses are run on a dyno at much lower speeds so no aero, weather, temp involved. I'm keeping my reservation.

My 2018 TM3LR could and does regularly do 240-250 miles with most highway driving at 80 - max speed 85 (of course that averages down to ~ 72-74 total from point A to B over ~ 200 miles nonstop)..with cruising efficiency of ~ 245w/mile and total avg of 275w/mile.

If I drive like that in my R1T, I can easily hit 2.4-2.5 kWh. Easy.

So it is reasonable to assume the R2 will do much better than that. I guess 2.6-3.0.

Your example drive cycle is 340+ miles of range in my T. In a R2, I bet you can do 250 miles, easy peasy.

That is where it came from but sounds right to me. I just hope they don't drop the EPA ratings over night like Tesla did. The range works fine for our use case and how it's derived doesn't matter when I'm using the car to navigate to my next charging/pee stop.

I wish a new owner would post the Monroney label for the R2 with the 21" wheels. Our 2018 Model 3 says 130 MPGe and our '23 Model Y shows 122 MPGe. I think I saw a brief view of the R2 with the 20" AT showing 99 MPGe and the 21" showing 105 MPGe but it would be nice to see a clear picture of each.

On a side note…I did sell the car during COVID and actually made money on my Model 3…after 3 years of use. So all in all a great outcome!

Yes I looked into that in 2022.. could have sold the car for well more than I had paid for it (full launch minus $7500 - $2500) but even then more than nearly top line purchase price.. that was cray cray..

but I kept it since it’s been such a great car and still is, and has full FSD paid pre March 2019 - so it’ll most likely be a conversion vehicle possibly at some not too distant point.

Imagine buying a "used" 2016 Hyundai Sonata Sport for $21k with 114 miles on it from CarMax, driving it for 4 years and putting over 80,000 miles on it, then selling it to someone for $15k cash unreal times, bought my first Tesla in 2021 bc of that cash haul
