The point is you can't put 100kWh in a vehicle of this size without using a non skateboard battery. Rivian won't do that. They also won't build 2 layer battery packs like they did for R1
That is incorrect. You just use 46120 instead of 4695.

This brings up a point. The cheapest model Y standard ($40K model) has a range close to 340 miles, beating EPA.

I wonder how the $45K R2 does with a 75kWh battery. It might test below 200 miles
The gains between R2 RWD and AWD won't be as pronounced as other EVs. Rivian is using a front motor clutch disconnect in R2. Which is more efficient than front induction motors Tesla uses on their AWD variants.

R2 Prem RWD long range has 15miles more range than AWD(345 vs 330). So RWD R2 variant nets +4.5% over AWD.

2.83 m/kwh(1.045)= 2.96m/kwh - If it is 75kwh usable, should net 222miles 100% to 0% at 70mph.

Granted we don't know final spec/info of $45k Standard R2. Also Rivian advertised range figures are not exactly accurate to be making assumptions with.

But then you raise floor height which they don't like already
True you gain just under 1" in pack height, but you certainly do not lose the skateboard or require a double stack.

I personally never trust the EPA ratings. I always give 70-75% of what the EPA says and I estimate that to be my true real world range. I'm not surprised at 253 miles result from Rivian but i'm surprised at the Tesla's lmao. Because during my past 5 years of Tesla ownership experience, Tesla never achieved 100% of EPA ratings. Maybe they've improved in this model? not sure.

I'd love to see if there's anyone who can put up 20 inch rims and 20 inch AS tires and run the same test again and see if Rivian can extra more miles and then i'll be happy with that.

Someone said it's not fair to turn AC to 68 ...I say it's fair and it reflects the real world usage scenario. Are you not turning on AC when it's 90 degrees outside ? Don't kid yourself lol.

I pretty much set cruise 1 or 2 miles over posted limit on my long trips.

One trip from Florida Pan Handle to SoCal on I10 I was doing the pretty much posted speed with the exception of the 80 MPH sections in Texas where I was doing 78. There was a guy in a Ford lightening going over speed limit. We were pretty much hitting the same chargers one day. I would leave before him, he would eventually catch and pass me each time. But as the day went on I kept getting closer to the next stop before he passed. Eventually we got to a charger around the same time, I did not see him after that stop.

He was burning many more kWh than I was and it required him to go to higher charge percents at each stop where the charge time suffers.

My personal experience, on shorter trips speed is not a huge factor but on cross country trips, slower seems to be faster.

Given R1's shortcomings in real-world range tests, I'm not that surprised the R2 underachieved, but at the same time a bit disappointed that Rivian has not learned to be more factual. That said, as long as there aren't too many more flat-bed stories (cannot deal with dead), I'll happily purchase once my # is called.

The R2 has a 96 MPGe highway rating, that is 2.85 m/kWh, that was pretty much spot on to watch they achieved. They were actually above that before they applied some adjustment.

My R1S is pretty close on the EPA ratings as well.

EV road tripping I don't drive as fast, it just means you have to spend more time sitting around and charging. I'd rather go 55-60 and enjoy the drive, getting much better efficiency.

It is pretty disappointing to see a car with a headline range of 330 mi fall so far short of that, but highway driving hasn't ever been the best case for EVs.

I think OOS needs to refine their testing procedures though, they're relying on speed, odometer, and power meters in the cars, and only running in one direction. They need to use GPS, the same routes, the same time of day and conditions, measure the energy they're putting into the car, and run the same route out and back averaging the two directions.

They say they're going for "real world" but what they really mean is their narrow definition of how they, and how they assume others, will drive. What we need more is standardized testing so that we can accurately compare between vehicles. Bjørn is much better at this, but he's doing most testing in Northern Europe and doesn't have the same cars available.

If you look at the speed and distance,
each of the different tests lasted between 20 and 30 minutes.

Bjørn is much better at this, but he's doing most testing in Northern Europe
The 1,000 km tests are more realistic, including charging time,
while weather situations in Norway is also a big differentiator.
