To be fair, his test was performed without any comparative data. At least with OoS, they had the Model Y Performance there at the same time for comparison testing. So, I think it's a more valid test, IMHO.

And It's cool seeing that OoS is doing testing right in my neck of the woods, they mentioned turning around in Zebulon on 64, which is right down the road

Which gets to my comment above. They still had BOTH cars side-by-side for testing. So real-world data from both under the exact same conditions. It's still disappointing.

Very helpful having both vehicles tested side by side.

Rivian has been cherry picking EPA results from R1T launch. But R2 is another level. Tesla got so much flak for doing this for years(Juniper/Highland refreshes now regularly test above EPA). Yes EPA needs to move to one standardized test. But manufacturers should err on side of caution when advertising ranges. RJ has some explaining to do...efficiency and range are no where near Tesla competition like he stated.

Actually I’m not particularly surprised by the R2 range but instead impressed by how well the MYP did. I had a 2018 Tesla M3 that could not make it 200 miles at 70 mph.

Unfortunately the MY does not meet my use case…plus it is visually unattractive IMHO. Like others, I simply don’t understand why there is so much variation in EPA test results. Also, RJ could have kept his mouth shut and await results of real world testing…which I’m sure Rivian also conducted. Trust and integrity is one reason people might choose Rivian over a Tesla…and Rivian certainly lost some points.

Oh damn I just realized this test was done when it was 98 degrees outside and they set the temperature to 68 degrees auto (22:32 mark)! Ok I feel better about this now actually. They used a ton of power on HVAC in this test.

This aligns better with Tom's test knowing this. Tom was on 20" AT wheels and got 3 MPK, so 3.1 MPK on 21" AS, which jives with what OOS showed on their ~25 mile tests in earlier videos at 70mph.

89 x 3 = 267 miles
89 x 3.1 = 276 miles

A big difference in real world IMO.

I wonder how much juice was used for climate control in each respective cars. If the MY has better IR control, that could lower the cooling load for the MY compared to the R2. Just a thought.

Yesh but I personally don't care at all about Model Y. I care about how far R2 goes. So this information does matter for R2 range, and trying to link this test up with Tom's on 20" AT.

It's been pretty clear to me that the person you're conversing with has never really been interested in a Rivian, only like sharing negative things about them while trying to appear positive.

My best guess is that Kyle will end up with a BMW. He drives a lot and the iX3 is a better road tripper. R2 is awesome and great for most people though.

Well, I don't know who runs @OutofSpecKyle 's Rivian account, but it looks like he bought an R2 to me...

The build date is the same as Jose's, does it find vehicles you've created a driver profile on? He may have been driving Wasabi under his own profile instead of messing with Jose's settings.

... I'll be keeping an eye on other claims made by RJ (i.e., point-to-point autonomous driving by year's end).

I'll be shocked if point to point actually happens in 2026.

I don't think RJ is being intentionally misleading, I just don't think it is possible based on where A+ is as of today.

My 2018 TM3LR could and does regularly do 240-250 miles with most highway driving at 80 - max speed 85 (of course that averages down to ~ 72-74 total from point A to B over ~ 200 miles nonstop)..with cruising efficiency of ~ 245w/mile and total avg of 275w/mile.

It’s part HVAC and in vehicle climate but also the battery conditioning at higher temps.. the temp outside seemed to be somewhere between 85-90 based on various on screen displays between cars. That can easily sap another 5% from the battery over extended periods. And keeping temp to 68 in the car, while nice the giant glass roof in high external temp during the main part of the day IS going to require more energy for climate.

Overall, the R2 should, SHOULD be able to get closer to 275-280 in this type of driving, stopping, starting, passing, lifting off (which would have produced a bit more regen) and not just a constant drive ~ 255 miles.

I may see if I can find a Turo nearby and do a local roadtrip to compare to my VERY strong TM3LR for our typical road trip use case.. Bay Area to SoCal or Bay Area to Bend, or Yosemite, stuff like that.

They did say they were going to track it on their local track, I imaging a 0-60 is coming, and a track lap time - not a lot of compares, but they did have that Cayenne EV with them at the time.

Hopefully, they got that all done BEFORE they shredded the Scorpions on the track doing drifting - which It does - not that that matters one bit.

Was not my experience during 3 years of ownership. I frequently made a 145 mile trip at 80 mph (starting with full charge) and would typically arrive at my destination with 23 - 28% battery level (depending on wind). I would never take the Tesla on this trip if it was cold outside.
