Thanks for reporting and following up with all the details. The Rivian manual states that tire size on an axle must be within 2/32" (IIRC), and it's intuitively obvious to us car enthusiasts that it matters, but your situation clearly illustrates what goes wrong on a Rivian with a mismatch. This justifies the recommendation that when a tire is damaged and unrepairable you should probably not replace just 1 tire.

Driving a short distance on a vehicle with a standard axle would probably have been fine .. but I did put nearly 4000 miles on those tires, so I do wonder what the long-term damage could have been on a different vehicle.

The tire shop replaced all of my tires today with new ones (the right ones!), and they are covering the costs at Rivian for the diagnostics.... so in my mind they're doing everything right.

One more interesting datapoint. On the way down to the shop this morning I turned off (all the way) Stability Control. Pretty much immediately the regen started working properly on the rear tires! I read this to mean that the car basically was detecting "slip" constantly due to the different tire speeds between the tires, and when it was detecting sslip it was choosing to not use regenerative breaking on those weels.

Absolutely! I was thinking the same thing. Also regular tire rotation is even more critical, or you may just wear your tires into a situation where you have a large offset between them, and the car could start driving funny. Overall this was a huge learning experience.

The national "Discount Tire" company operates as "America's Tire" in much of California, because a separate company has the right to continue operating as "Discount Tire" there.

THANK YOU for your post and following through the solution.

I had a non repairable puncture on my toyo open country at3 evs in a rear tire.

Both rear tires were replaced and then rotated to the front. Went for my first drive on the interstate and the car was impossible to keep a constant speed at 70mph cruise control. Lots of phantom braking and engaging and disengaging rear motor. I was very worried... And it was only happening at interstate speeds.

I wouldn't have noticed that the new tires were LT without your post. Thank you again.
