R2 Towed 24 hours In (after charging issues at Tesla Supercharger)

I know it defeats the purpose of R2. But it’s now proven, or not depends on view.

A quick tip most probably don’t want to hear, if you want to use the Tesla Supercharging network, buy a Tesla.

I have owned 2 Rivian's and 1 BMW EV for almost 4 years, rarely using TSC but even when I do it works fine. There are other charging options out there and they work. Maybe this would have happened at an EVGO maybe not, we don't know yet.

My R2 was towed earlier today due to charging issues at a Tesla Supercharger. I was on the road around 120 miles away from home and was limited with the amount of charging options around me. I had just picked up the R2 yesterday so only had it for less than 24 hours and this was my first attempt at charging it. I pulled up to a Tesla Supercharger and the first attempt it started to charge ok (I used the Tesla app to initiate the charge) and then about 10-15% in it gave me a charge error just out of the blue. I tried to re-initiate again with the Tesla app but I got the same error immediately as it started to charge. So then I tried to initiate via plug and charge just through Rivian, same error.

At this point I tried another stall at the same SC with the same results. I then called Rivian customer service while on my way to another SC (the only other one that was available in the town I was in). They had me troubleshoot by doing soft and hard resets to the vehicle. I tried charging again at the 2nd SC and still had the same results. The rep even had me try to initiate the charge via the Rivian app and again the same result. Because all the other charging options required an adapter (which I hadn't gotten yet since I just picked up the car yesterday) I was pretty much stranded. Rivian towed it since there was nothing more I could do.

One thing that I didn't think about until now was that I had smelled a burning rubber smell coming from the HVAC while the first charge was happening and I thought maybe it was the air outside or the HVAC so I turned off air recirculation and it the smell went away. Shortly after is actually when the error came up for the charging stopping and not working. I'm wondering now if something burned or something electrical got fried? I don't know.

Crazy day for me though.

I saw David Vaught posted this video earlier on Youtube highlighting an issue that I also experienced while driving between the two SC's highlighted here in his video where some sensor literally just keep going off and I thought the car was going haywire:



So crazy that someone else had the same issue but I guess these are the early issues of this car thus far. Curious if anyone else has had anything similar. Will find out more info on my R2 soon hopefully by Monday/Tuesday since they're closed tomorrow.

Yes that really is dissapointing as you had to get serviced three times. You would think at the first service they would have run a fuill diagnostic on the vehicle. Maybe they did, who knows. The smell of burning wires is definately a big concern. I think at that point, I, myself would ask for a new replacement and let them deal with those issues. You would think they should at least test the charging and basic operations of the vehicle before handing it off to a customer. I live in Florida and it makes my skin curl just thinkiong about waiting on the side of the road for a flatbed to arrive in 100+ degree heat. The other thing that makes me wonder is that they are releasing the vehicles in large numbers and will they be able to keep up with the service issues and not creating back logs of people waiting to be serviced. I am sorry you have those issues and wish you the best of luck.

so sorry this happened to you. I hope Rivian takes a hard look on the issue and fixes it for you (or even just give you a brand new car). This should have never happened. Especially this is their make or break model aimed at mass population. You can't have issues like this.

Not a good sign. I sure hope it gets fixed soon, not just for you but for all of us that have a reservation or pending delivery.

The R2 will be my first EV and without any personal experience I plan on testing different charging locations adapters and companies in my area before I am out of my home range. Your experience is one of my fears, being outside of home range and not being able to charge.

Have you tested a Tesla (3 or Y)? Do that before you make a final decision on

I've ridden in a Tesla (Uber) before but I have do desire to own a Tesla product. I've known people that own them and love them but they're not for me.

Besides the Tesla offerings are very different from Rivian. Apples and oranges.

I guess the moral of the story is to charge at a Rivian/Tesla/Ionna/Walmart super charger within the first few weeks to stress the DC charge components before you plan a trip.

Yep. And I do this with my Gen 1 R1T before every trip, especially since I only do fast charging a few times a year.

This thread is very troubling to me. I would really like to buy an R2, but after reading this and other reports on this forum, I am very concerned.

Spending over $60k for an SUV that is essentially in beta testing, is not something I want to do.

The reports of a multitude of software glitches, plus missing features (compared with the Tesla Y) makes me think that perhaps it would be wise (maybe for all of us) to wait until a stable vehicle is released.

I understand that Rivian is eager to get the R2 on the road, but at what cost? Reliability of the one and only car I have is paramount to me.

Am I over reacting, or do you feel my concerns are legitimate?

When buying a new first year model of any manufacturer, its a crap shoot. I'm 6 miles from the service center and have backup transportation if needed.

In 2006, I bought the first year of the Rav4 with the V6. Guess what...at 2 months the whole engine had to be pulled and didn't have the vehicle for 2 months. It never had another issue and took it to 215k before trading in. Stuff happens.

There at tens of thousands of Rivian owners but only a few of them are active on these Forums. It’s a place to report issues so gives the impression that failures/issues are more frequent than they really are. I’ve now purchased 3 Rivians and have well over 100,000 trouble free miles. I got one of the very first R2s to go to non employee. All is well.

Don’t be. R2 VINs are now up in the 4000s. This is just two examples. Mathematically that’s 0.05%. No need to turn a grain of sand into a mountain.

Not a single car produced ever has a perfect reliability record. None. The important take away here is how the owners are treated and supported by the manufacturer once failure occurs. Digest all takes you see online. Not just the negative ones and consequently confining yourself in an echo chamber of negativity.

Apply critical thinking and maintain objectivity.

If you're worried about it, just wait till you feel better about it. You don't have to buy the car right away.

Just remember that online forums and reddit concentrate reports about peoples issues because people are looking for solutions. The people who are super happy and having zero problems are out living their lives (not commenting online).
