My longest road trips have been around 1700 miles, and I haven't experienced any of this, and would still take the EV instead of ICE. My ONLY road trip issues have been with EA chargers.
I also did around 1700 miles trip. No issues other than seat belt ding when my kid was buckled up. Charging no issue. UHF no issue. This trip was just 3 days before free UHF expired.
The recent update is to blame for all the nonsense. My GPS now shows my vehicle position like 2 streets away or on my back street. Center screen was all going crazy after that update. Reset it it started working. UHF error popped up in middle of my drive and dinging and displayed take control. Again had to reset it to make it start working properly. This latest update instead of making it better, messed up lots of features that were working fine before.
But UHF handled good on my trip. It slowed down on curve roads or I took over to help.
Yes it does freak out unnecessarily and will start applying breaks for no reasons.
Another thing I noticed that if another vehical in other lane in front of you is very close to the dividing line this vehical will freak out and will start braking.
Charging was no issue. Tesla, RAN and EA.
A/C was powerful. In fact had to raise the temperature because too cold.
Came from Gen 1 R1T to Gen 2 R1T. Build quality went down substantially. Doors creaking, door handle squealing, wind noice floor mat quality (plaid). Overall build looks cheaper.
R1T TM 2025 22" pirellis. Current milage 20200.

Yes. There's other "car of the present" problems that I didn't even list here. HVAC auto mode sometimes goes off the reservation and has a mind of its own -- my wife was varying the temp between 72 and 78 just to get comfortable. Keyless entry, while WORLDS better since the UWB update, still has a lag sometimes where I walk up to the car and stand there like an idiot for a few seconds before it unlocks. The audio streaming just...stops sometimes. FM radio locks into a station sometimes and doesn't let you change it.

This is all stuff that's been solved on every other car for a decade or two.

Not to mention the lack of some creature comforts you would normally expect, like auto-heated/cooled seats which nearly every other car I've owned in the last 10 years has had.

The good news is, a lot of this could be fixed with software. But will it be? I know the punchline around here is voice texting, and that it took years for that feature to be implemented while most other cars have had it for a long time. (I couldn't care less about voice texting, but just to make the point.)

Unfortunately the ride on the R1S seems unfixable.

Like I said...I want Rivian to succeed and I like the idea of the product, but the execution falls short. When people ask me if I recommend it...I only do so with caveats/reservations.
Sorry to hear you had so many issues. I’m sure it distracted from having a relaxing and enjoyable trip. Definitely frustrating.

Although I agree with you that there are features I have no interest in and wish Rivian would focus their attention elsewhere, I must say your vehicle seems to be in the 6-sigma tail of the normal distribution curve for “issues”.

I hope for your sake (and Rivians) they are able to address each of your issues and resolve the them so that your next roadtrip is a much better experience for you and your family.

Are you by chance using Home Assistant and the Rivian integration or the Rivolt thing?

I'm using the former and am pretty sure Rivian is either detecting it and blocking the account, or those sorts of tools polling is causing me to exceed the allowed rate limits.

When I have it happen I have to re-authenticate or at least disable it for a bit to get everything working again.
Interesting, I was using both! I have disabled them and we'll see if that helps. If so, obviously that one's on me.

Well, one could say that Rivian should have a public API, use OAuth for security, and offer the ability to scope the issued token down to a limited set of permission.

Well, yes, that would be ideal. Along with proper rate limiting metadata in headers so clients can adjust requests accordingly.

I'm looking at the R2 as my first EV ( all of this is new to me ) ..... this cost to charge was eye opening $457.23/2171mi.....as long road trips are common for me...

Charging was expensive. I didn't pick charging stations based on cost; it was more about convenience to amenities. And I knew supercharging wasn't cheap, but I was shocked at how much we spent. With the average MPG we got on our old V6 Kia Telluride (our previous large SUV), I calculate that we would have spent ~$400 on gas -- less than what we spent charging the Rivian, even with gas around ~$5/gallon.

Don’t drive 70 mph, keep your max speed to 65 mph and that will make a big difference in your efficiency (miles/kWh value). Also, the R2 should be more efficient than the R1.

I’ve done two 2400 mile (round trip) road trips from N. Oregon to SoCal. I do the same as the OP, charge based on convenience, not price. The big difference is I always drive 5 mph under the posted speed limit. I do this because it’s much more relaxing for me. My total charge bill for both trips was ~$400. That is significantly less (by about $200 using an avg price of $5/gal which might be too low) than my old ICE SUV which got about 19 mpg and took regular. Gas prices in Oregon and California are some of the highest in the nation.

I didn’t buy an EV to save on auto energy costs, I bought it to reduce my CO2 footprint.

OP try some dry silicone lube spray on the door handles to get rid of the noise works wonders!
We head up to Cooperstown,NY from Nashville in 3 weeks for our 3rd big road trip… all set to go until we hit the charging desert in upstate NY where we will be staying… but I’ve tackled that before when we went to Central Maine… definitely take advantage of the Tesla membership it likely would have cut your cost by 30-40% and frustrations… also I’ve found it was never worth sitting at a fast charger past 75-80% unless an absolute must…!

We head up to Cooperstown,NY from Nashville in 3 weeks for our 3rd big road trip…
We spend Thanksgiving in Cooperstown each year and it's no longer the charging desert it was on our first trip. A couple of thoughts for you:

There are now L3 chargers that actually work downtown in the Chestnut Street Lot by Doubleday Field:
Rivian R1T R1S Indianapolis to Maine road trip (via Philly and Boston) - 2200 miles 1782217201057-bt

We previously had to drive to Oneonta to charge with a L3 - there are 8 Tesla (open to non-Tesla) chargers and 4 EVolveNY chargers in the same Mirabito Convenience Store lot.

Ommegang also has L2 chargers in their parking lot - It's a nice place to hang out for a couple hours and you'll at least be able to pick up the charge you used to get there.

On our first trip with our R1S in 2023 Plugshare showed nothing - not even the Ommegang chargers. I packed our portable charger and had to use 120V to charge, but it worked because we were there for 5 days and I just kept it plugged in whenever we were home. Safe travels!

Whereabouts in upstate and which way are you coming through? There are a couple "holes" in the map, but I've not found it to be an issue with a large pack and 2.0mi/kWh average.

Most of the major interstates are covered decently, so if you're just passing through it shouldn't be too bad.

Yeah I went and bought some and watched some videos/read forum threads on how to apply it, but it didn't eliminate the noise.

Yea not sure if any difference to our Gen 1 T, but I had to apply 3-4 times across a week or two period on mine before it really got better. I also cycled lock/unlock 5-6 times while applying each time… if that doesn’t work then it may be more serious…
