I'm pretty sure they seem like a company that's got their act together and are executing. Marketing is essential to a company in this situation, so I'd hardly their marketing efforts of little value. Mind you in journalism school I had to take a marketing class, and the professor flatly stated to a room full of journalists that marketing has little to do with telling the truth, because it's about creating an impression. Still it serves its purpose. That's quite fair. But many of the Rivian announcements are for PR value with little substance - how many autonomous vehicles is Rivian delivering to Uber this quarter? Next quarter?
No question VWAG needs software help, and they have a desperation deal in place with Rivian. Clever negotiating by RJ and the team, but the rubber hits the road when Rivian software ships on VW group vehicles - otherwise it's all one-time services revenue which provides non-dilutive capital and "progress" towards profitability but anyone worth their salt would reverse out for the purposes of evaluating Rivian's ongoing operations.
Rivian made a number of shrewd bets, including monetizing other IP like Also, while they could. Their marketing team and corp dev team deserves an A+. Now it's up to the non-EDV side of the business to prove there is a real future here. As a 2025 R1S owner, I'm hopeful. But cautious.
