here in TX I already pay the state $200/yr.

I don't have a problem paying my "fair share" but the fee structure needs to be fair and independent of the energy source.

💯 If state and federal flat fees are fair then let’s apply them to every vehicle and remove the gas tax.

Please write your representative if they are on the transportation committee and let them know you want a fair tax that applies to everyone.

Nobody likes to be taxed and I agree this does sound excessive - I think it should be lower across the board or it should come in conjunction with higher gas taxes.

In their defense EVs are heavier vehicles which put more wear and tear on roads. But unlike the gas tax, this one charges us Rivian users the same fee as much lighter and more fuel efficient EVs (bonus for us).. it also charges owners of two EVs double when, in theory, their miles are split between the two vehicles where each is driving half the miles.

Still, I prefer the flat tax - one less thing to keep track of when filing tax returns - I just wish it was lower.

$130 / yr growing to $150 / yr in the bipartisan house bill. It’s nearly twice as much as what gas car owners effectively pay.

The U.S. really hates EVs I guess

Here in Utah we have a (one time) option to pay a fixed EV road maintainable state tax or an amount based on mileage driven. It's accessed at registration renewal.
Please consider that because EVs are heavier than ICE vehicles, they are rougher on roads. Perhaps a higher tax is fair.

I hate this distinction.

Highways are engineered to handle semi trucks, which are typically hauling 55,000 lbs-m or more. And while, yes, they're subjected to around $550/year to account for their advanced wear, most EVs are falling closer to 5,000 lbs-m (Tesla M3, MY, R2, for example). So, it should be 1/10th of that share, then? Or prorated based on weight and distributed load (axles).

Whereas I'm already paying $250/year in state alternative-fuel use tax in PA. Plus $202 registration, because 'truck.' (which this also factors weight into). So, for the privilege of driving my EV truck, I will therefore be paying $452 to the state and another $150 to the federal government?

My penalty for going green is $602/year and likely to continue going up over time.
Great.

Also keep in mind that the weight of an EV passenger vehicle, even something as massive as the Hummer EV, is still nowhere near the weight of a commercial semi-truck (up to ~ 80,000 lbs). Impact of EV passenger vehicles on road structures is negligible and, while not completely negligible, is also not as impactful to the road surface layer as you may think.

That said, vehicle weight classifications have long been defined and I would be perfectly on board with a tiered road tax based around this classification. Given that passenger vehicles in general have grown heavier since Classes 1-8 were defined back in the mid 70s (upwards of 700-900 lbs across the board), it might also be time to review how these tiers are defined.

Also in the interest of fairness, I could see defining mileage brackets (much like income tax brackets) so that people who drive more pay more than those who drive less.

💯this. those who oppose the transition to electric vehicles, complain about things being unfair however, every proposal I have seen come out of that camp is also unfair.

Does anyone find it ironic that this proposal news comes at the same time the current administration is talking about suspending the federal gas tax?

all I can do is shake my head

cold dead hands, etc.

I'll just end up eliminating my rear plate like I already have the front.

Absolute horse$h*t, on principle.

I don't understand how the members of the transportation committee that came up with this think it is fair and push it forward. Members of both parties seem to be in favor of it. All I can surmise is that they want more money regardless of the means and some probably like the punitive aspects that reduce momentum on a "green" agenda.

I was frustrated in my attempts to provide feedback to them -- they (understandably I guess) only accept feedback from their constituents. Even though a Colorado representative is on the committee, I couldn't send them a message through normal means. This is why my earlier post encouraged folks to write their representative if they are on the Transportation and Infrastructure committee. It would be more efficient and likely that we could make this proposal better while it is in committee rather than going to the floor.

This is complete bullshit. We are already paying Montana $190 per year for each of our EVs. Ridiculous that EVs have become so political. How much electricity do you think the orange douche's ballroom will consume?

Might just skip our renewals and take our chances with the smokies.

Here in Maryland they are killing us with fees upon fees.....seems to be the new way so they can bring in additional revenue while still being able to claim they didn't raise taxes. Meanwhile the result for both the government coffers and our wallets is the same.
