Customer service chat support told me it is now just a cable.
Rivian still states on their website that the cable ties into the alarm system:

" Our remote monitoring system features a cut-resistant locking cable that wraps around your gear and plugs into the bed wall – connecting directly into the vehicle security system. Remotely monitor your gear through the Rivian app and receive instant alerts if the system senses an interruption. A camera in the bed also monitors your gear."

With that said, I was always under the impression that the locking mechanism could detect if someone was trying to mess with the cable through movement. Perhaps that is still the case? I don't remember if prior versions of the website specifically stated that the cable itself could detect being cut. Also, Rivian could simply mean that the lock itself is part of the vehicle security system and that's it.

Also, this concern pointed out a huge flaw with Rivian's website: it's hard to find anything. "Gear Guard" information is under the "Utility" section for the R1T but then you have to further go into "Explore Truck Bed" to find anything about it and it isn't mentioned in the Truck Bed summary. Poor design if you ask me. It took me a few minutes to find anything on gear guard. I initially thought it had been removed completely.

They just posted a new Rivian Story on gear guard. It looks pretty analogous to the Tesla Sentry Mode system, but with the added bonus of having the cable that is part of the system so you can lock items up on the outside.

A few things I picked up from the video I'm excited about (but also would love to learn more about).

1. They specifically call out the videos stored by Gear Guard are stored "on the internal HD". I wonder how much space it uses and how they deal with running out of space. Tesla Sentry mode requires using a USB-based HD or flash drive which has always been hit or miss. I've had numerous problems where my drive just stops getting recognized until the next OTA. I use a Samsung T5 SSD. I also wonder if/how you offload videos from the Rivian.
2. The brief snapshots of a person flipping through the videos on the car display looked really responsive. Sentry mode tends to over record and the experience of looking through the video on the car itself is basically useless. I disconnect the HD and use my laptop to view them.
3. Can you stream the camera view with your phone? This was added recently on the Tesla and it's a bit slow and clumsy, but nice to have.
Here's the exact page in the manual referencing #1:

The best part of Gear Guard is the look the police give you when they show up 34 hours later and you eagerly offer to show them the video. "Oh.. uh.. great... yeah.. that'll help us..... "catch".... the person that did this."

I don't dislike there being video surveillance, I quite like it & especially alarms being tied into the app, but the cable part is pretty useless. If you lock up a nice bike or something thinking gear guard makes it "safe".. oh boy.

I know this may come as a complete shock to some of you but there are still parts of this country (USA) where people don’t walk around with bolt cutters…

Agree 100%. Even if it was tied into the alarm system, no one should trust a braided cable or a bike rack lock or anything similar to keep your expensive bikes safe. All of those are just efforts to make it slightly harder to steal something - not to *prevent* them from actually stealing it. But adding multiple layers of inconveniences can make it hard enough for a thief they give up before they are successful.

Many people think their garage junk is safe because the door is down.
Forreal. People should be more careful.

I've seen the local deer population getting HomeLink installed on their antlers and trying to program it to my door.

A new "Story" on Rivian.com includes a short paragraph and video on Gear Guard. At several points, the video shows an R1T initially thought to be LIMESTONE (EDIT: but now believed to be El Cap Granite).

Here's the Gear Guard paragraph:

"We created the Gear Guard security system for Rivian vehicles to give you greater peace of mind on all your adventures. On R1T, we use a combination of five cameras embedded around the truck, a braided steel cable that secures items in the bed and on the roof, and a watchful (but friendly) animated Gear Guard character in the center display to protect the things you care about while you’re away."

Here's the video:

While I agree that there are no guaranteed theft deterrents, the fact that the truck could have notified you in real time of someone messing with your stuff would have been a uniquely powerful tool. I certainly would feel better running in to the store if I knew I'd get an alert if someone cut my lock cable. The vehicle alarm going off would also be a nice benefit because it would draw bystander attention, which most bike thieves are not prepared for. As it stands though, it's really no better than using a padlock on a bed tie down.

Perhaps Rivian could release a Bluetooth enabled cable down the line that offered some of this functionality.

I'm still pretty sure that's El Cap Granite. It's just under really bright lights.
