Not intending to defend Rivian, as I am as disappointed as anyone with their horrible communication and misleading (lying anyone?) announcements through the years, but hasn't Amazon supported Rivian far more than all of us retail customers combined? Something about $5 billion.
Amazon's investment, as revealed in Rivian's SEC filings, totaled $1.345 billion, which translates to a 20% ownership stake in Rivian's stock. Ford, by comparison, contributed $800 million.

All of their metallic colours are great.
Agreed. Honestly, the white looks great too. They did a great job with colors.

True. I’ve got a bunch of photos from my test drive and the color looks different in all of them.

The additional cost to customers does not have to translate into additional costs to manufacture. Look at TESLA, Porsche and others. Historically, TESLA offers one free color and there other colors vary in price. Porsche has a few free colors and typically one or two additional color groups and adds a "paint to sample" option where they will do any color you want, for a fee. For Rivian (and others), the uncharges translate to fewer people having those colors. It's a personal decision but trying to get Rivian to justify why the cost is higher for certain colors is a fools errand in my opinion.

I emailed this question to Rivian last week if there is any process differences, quality, more layers, etc or just premium pricing on some colors.

response from Rivian:

“That is an interesting question! Colors can vary by swatches and lighting and photo editing, monitors all create differences. Costs of producing colors vary as well. So, we price them accordingly. All colors have different metallic effects with the exception of Glacier White which we consider a "solid" color.

And these are the color descriptions from the field at First Mile!
  • Limestone: grey with green undertones similar to lichen, or the reflection of a spring forest on wet granite.
  • Compass Yellow: Whether it's a grove of aspens in fall, a goldfinch darting between cattails, or the subtitles in an old French film, yellow has a way of grabbing your eye.
  • LA Silver: You'll find hints of blue in the silver, like early morning sun hitting a windy patch of water.
  • Red Canyon: A red with Brown undertones and yellows that appear in full sun, imagine the light filtering through a Utah canyon at sunset.
  • Midnight: The color of perfectly clear night sky between the stars. Look closely for tiny specks of blue.
  • Forest Green: The green of a forest canopy mixed with metallic flakes that show up like sunlight through the leaves.
  • Launch Green: We modeled this color after a rich and shadowy green coating used in the R1 manufacturing process. We were surprised when we saw it, and liked it so much, we added it to the palette to commemorate this first launch.
  • El Cap Granite: Named and styled after the majestic granite wall in Yosemite Valley.
  • Glacier White: When you look at snow or glacial ice, you see more than just the surface. Light reflected from within inspired this multi-layered white.
  • Rivian Blue: Deep ocean blues that reflect clear skies above, this is a hue of both optimism and depth, energy and calm.
May your holidays be merry and bright and as always, full of adventures!

Your fellow adventurer”
Poetic descriptions! Pay that poet. ? I really like the look of “…the light filtering through a Utah canyon at sunset”. ?

It looks stunning in person. Whether or not it’s worth $2500 is a personal decision. I for one, think it Is.
And I put my money where my mouth is. ?

That’s my fav wheel color combo for the R1S. Saw it at the Venice hub several months back and it’s what pushed me to switch from the R1T, then I realized the wait I would be.. so I switched back ?. But congrats, great looking suv.

Tesla started it. The proof its all marketing and resale control is when Tesla decides to change the 'free' color from time to time. They are just trying to control the color distribution in the world, because a color doesn't just get more expensive all of a sudden.

You might be right, I am just tired of the whites/silvers/grays/blacks, I am signed up for blue for now, but have thought about silver, but I would then want the green interior to change things up. So silver exterior+green interior is $2000, or Blue+Ocean Coast for $2500. And like I said earlier, once I justified $1500 for a color, another $1000 for one I wanted more seemed doable, but maybe not financially responsible (but lets be honest, these trucks aren't exactly financially responsible).
Just buy white and then wrap it in whatever color u want. You'll save the upcharge and can put it towards the wrap. Win-win!

As the majority of the of the cars and trucks in this country are white, gray, or black, I'm surprised that those are not the colors that they charge more for. We elected to pay the $2,500 upgrade to get the Rivian blue. It is the only color offered that we really like. We like the red also but it is too metallic. The compass Yellow is way cool, but we were afraid that after a while it would scream state road department.
