As of the end of August 2025, here’s where things stand with Openpilot on first-generation Rivians.

We recently tested it on our 2022 Rivian R1T running a Comma 3X, the Longitudinal Upgrade Kit, and Sunnypilot. In our latest video, we break down how it’s performing right now — what works smoothly, what’s still limited, and what owners can realistically expect today.

If you’re curious about how Openpilot is evolving on Gen 1 Rivians, give it a watch and let us know your experiences or questions.

"There are people who prefer the Rivian longitudinal."

Sure, yeah, there are people who like McDonald's too.
I feel personally attacked by this.

Rivian longitudinal cannot get you through the McD drive-through.
This is true, but last time I tried long thru a drive thru I drove right past the pay window.... :p

For the steering torque issue, is it spoofable? Like make the system believe that it's less than it is? Probably not, but figured I'd ask lol

No, it just is what it is. The lkas control can only turn the system so hard. The best adjustment currently is swapping the tires for others that have proven to lessen the turning friction allowing it to get more out of the torque it can apply.

This will be a non-issue if/when angle turning can be implemented.

Oh, so it's like it physically can only push so hard? It sounded like there was a sensor somewhere that was like, oop too much torque abort abort lol I was thinking maybe like a replacement sensor or something that reports slightly less would be able to trick it or a well placed resistor or something lol idk

Makes sense

It’s really a mix of both. The key measurement here is lateral acceleration, capped at 3 m/s². The torque settings are applied uniformly across all Rivians, so because some vehicles already hit that cap, we can’t increase torque for the ones that don’t.

What I'd like to see (in the short term) is a way to have a user-configurable setting so that the cap is configurable. For example, I'm still riding on the OEM 21" tires. Until I change, it would be nice to be able to set a parameter to allow my crappy tires to perform OK. I get that for some, who have nicer tires than the OEM, a different setting would not be a good idea, but why does it have to be One Size Fits All? It's SW. There should be a parameter.

In the long term, of course, I'd like to see angle-based steering and the issue becomes moot.

You could probably set that up in your own fork, but it'll never show up in a main fork because of the potential for abuse.

Great info, do you think we're pushing the limit of the (old) hardware that Comma 3x uses?

Not at all. From what I understand current models only use about 40-50% of the Comma 3X's processing power.
