Thanks for the analysis. Silly question. What limits the available roads we can use ADAS on? Rivian mapping of them or vehicle generation and the hardware/software? Surprised by the limited # of roads I can use my Gen1 Highway Assist on.
The camera/processor camera in the mobile eye system on gen 1 isn't good enough to provide the great stability that it does with what it sees alone. It uses the map data as a crutch (knowing when curves are coming up, etc). Thus the mapping limitation

Especially notable because there ARE mobile eye systems that can do that, but none of them are as good as the ML models Tesla (and soon Rivian) can do

The Mobileye system Rivian went with for Gen1 basically sucks. It was bottom of the barrel even at the time, but there was the pandemic and supply chain crisis so I can't blame them TOO much.

Anyway, look into getting a Comma 3X and you won't be limited at all - you'll be able to use hands-free ADAS on ANY road - including offroad. Makes Gen 1 Rivians feel like a whole new vehicle.

Rivian's choices are the limitation. Be aware that you will never see another meaningful update to your Gen 1. Ever.

I still think highway lane changes are still too abrupt in the new update. Not as smooth as Teslas.

Pulling this over from the other thread. This is RJ taling extensively about autonomoy and what is coming as well as detailed differences between G1 and G2. (Watch it at 1.5x!) TL:DW Gen 1 is a technical cul de sac and he explains why. G2 is aiming for full FSD in 2026.

Does this mean that Gen 1 software is in, as @TexasBob puts it "a technical cut-de sac" and that Comma 3X is the only true option? I hope to hold on to my G1 R1T until the R2 is not merely available but also down the production learning curve a bit, so probably mid-2017.

Hey Tesla - take notes. This is how you roll out driver assistance updates - they work and your power users notice the improvements. My wife's Model Y has FSD and progress hasn't always been positive.
You're skating on thin ice here @OhmsLoL; the Teslarati and EFBs are likely to come down hard on that last remark.

100%. And those aren't TexasBob's words - those are RJ's own words! Actually, I think the way RJ put it is that Gen 1 technology is "throw-away" tech built around a rules-based system - totally irrelevant in an AI-built, end-to-end world. This is why, in my opinion, Rivian has been pretty open to Gen 1 users putting Commas into their Rivians, and tacitly supporting the development in the background.

As Godfodder said, you aren't going to see any more meaningful updates for the Gen 1, especially not on the Driver+ side of things.

Yes. Rivian can't do anything with Gen 1s because of hardware limitations. During COVID, supply chain disruptions occurred, and a new manufacturer with no clout was at the bottom of the list for the limited hardware supply allocations. They had a choice: release the truck with the available hardware and then try to make all the promises work, or risk running out of money before launching a product.

Neither choice was ideal, but that's how it is sometimes. I think Rivian made the right call, and getting the trucks out when they did gives Rivian a chance to survive as a company. Look at what delays have done to Canoo or even Lucid. Canoo doesn't exist anymore, and Lucid is circling the drain.

In case no one has told you already, you're doing the Lord's work here, with this testing. 💜

Discouraging for us Gen 1 owners, but then I understand the logic, somewhat, behind why people chose lease instead of buy - the technology is changing so fast. Still happy with my Gen 1, but I wish they'd expand the "mapped roads" to at least include the many 4+ lane roads (that aren't interstates) around my city. Maybe someday...

Never seen "EFB" before, but I can guess what it stands for. I'll say this as a HW3 owner that paid out the nose for something not delivered 4 years later - Bring it on.

Haha thanks, Mike! (Great name, btw 😉) Glad I'm not the only one who loves digging into this stuff. Love sharing it with the community

I agree! That would be so nice to at least expand the mapped roads.

That said - you should look into comma.ai It's REALLY good. My buddy has it on his gen1

Sorry. This will literally never happen.
