It does have a subscription service, but having CarPlay and homelink means I don’t care. I can not pay and the car will still function as I desire (e.g. open the garage door).
So the R1T won't open your garage door, unless you have the subscription service?

Is this fact or fear?

Seems like a stretch.

Owned a Model S (no car play) have a Range Rover (car play), didn't know it was such a make or break feature, but obviously a super loyal following.

Yesterday, GM started customer deliveries of the Hummer EV.

First vehicle sale fetched 2.5 million at auction.

79k model deliveries don't start until 2024. 89k model deliveries in 2023. 2022 deliveries look to be limited to 100k plus models.

You need Amazon Prime and a Rivian subscription /s

Heads up, Hummer EV deliveries started yesterday. Detroit Free Press, Electrek, etc have articles on it.

Just so strange. I won't accuse him of dishonesty but I'm not aware of any other examples of him reviewing a manufacturer-provided vehicle under controlled conditions, let alone one that isn't even being delivered yet.

In his first Hummer preview he was talking shit about how it would beat the Rivian to market and the Rivian wasn't even real, and now here we are with Rivians in garages and the Hummer still a prototype, and he's publishing reviews of the latter. Not the choice I would make in his shoes.

With taxes, or “out the door”, price of my build exceeds 100k. And where I live - taxes on vehicle purchases are over 10%

Upgraded rims, upgraded paint, all the accessories. If I recall, a R1T with Max Pack added up to like 120k, out the door.

Rivian are not cheap vehicles. They definitely exist at a price point that most people still associate with luxury.
So true. They are really expensive

Hummer is going to start at less than $80,000, once we get through the launch edition cars (which are already all sold).

I’m thinking I’m probably going to get the Hummer instead of the Rivian, primarily because it has CarPlay and homelink. Rivian is really pissing me off with the deliberate gimping of their car to push their subscription service. Really killing my desire for the car.
I’m disappointed and definitely not paying for a subscription service to drive my truck. No way.

I really like that the Hummer has some physical buttons, although they don't look great. Everything being on a touch screen is a pain and the biggest miss I see on the R1T so far.

As an example, the Taycan has haptic buttons on a separate screen for climate control and the dial to change driving modes, plus lights, suspension, and ride height on haptic buttons. They're not obtrusive buttons or switches and integrated well, it's a nice solution. I use them far more than I do the touchscreen.

The Hummer certainly isn't my cup of tea but I do appreciate some of the features. Oddly one thing DeMuro got right was that Rivian has some really cool, forward-thinking features while missing on some more traditional/basic ones. Nothing that is a dealbreaker for me but still interesting.

It requires an internet connection, which means your car needs a data plan, which means you need to be paying for their service.

Obioban is obviously incorrect. Rolling code garage door openers do not require an internet connection.

As proof, I point to the garage door and gate remotes affixed to the sun visors of my current cars; all of which appear to be compatible with the visors on the R1T and R1S if push ever comes to shove (which it won't).
Yes, but the Rivian is not including a homelink like devise. The FCC filing for the car did not including anything in the frequency range of garage door openers. So, if they're planning to do any sort of garage door opener, it'll be an IoT internet controled situation (presumably Alexa based, since amazon)... which means it won't work if your car doesn't have an internet connection, which it won't have if you don't pay for their truck as a service plan.

Lack of a traditional rolling code garage door opener is exactly what I was complaining about-- they're deliberately making the product (truck) worse in order to push their monthly service.

I have no idea if they’ll include an RF garage door opener. It’s not likely, but the lack of anything in the public FCC filings isn’t proof of that. There isn’t a single FCC filing for the entire vehicle. There are several filings for specific components. We have definitely not seen filings for every electronic component of the vehicle—Rivian has requested confidentiality for most of its filings—so lack of an RF transmitter so far is only proof that there isn’t an RF transmitter in the specific components whose filings have been made public so far.

I'm going to assume this portion of the owner's manual applies to my run of the mill garage door opener and will be a no cost feature for the lifetime of the vehicle until proven otherwise.

The problem stems from the fact that that entire section was removed from the latest version of the guide.
