After hearing about these Tesla owners getting no power and stuck inside their vehicle, I’m wondering where is the manual release lever in gen 1, if any?

Umm... It's the door handle...

Gen 1 doors are mechanical. And Teslas have an easy manual release for their electronically unlatching mechanism. Internet nonsense.

So only gen 2 are electrical door handles? Where is their manual release if power cuts out?

Literally right next to the open button.

Rivian R1T R1S R1S gen 1 manual release lever? 1000004676

I was a little concerned when someone posted a few months back about "getting stuck" in their Rivian. But after using a Gen2 loaner and only once using the door button, I opted for manual handle... Which was clearly a door handle in a natural location.

The fact that you have to take a trim peice off on the gen 2 to open the rear doors mechanically completely disqualified it for us when we were deciding between gens. There are mechanisms that allow a single assembly to function as the electronic and mechanical door opener and IMO there’s zero reason to not use one.

As an aside, I think they’re all stupid anyways and low value add feature.

The gen 2 has a door button and a lever? The picture shows the button and just the trim. So you have to rip off the trim to access the manual release lever? Seems over complicated.

Only covered in the rear.

The lack of mechanical door handle is probably a simpler design. Electronic door handles allow the door locks to be software controlled, such as the door not opening into cyclists or cars when they are detected.

The other thing is doing this design probably replaces child safety locks for the back doors. That's why you have to remove a panel

Better for dog mode too as the dog can't open the door

people complain that tesla has this design, but more and more cars are going to copy it.

There should still be an easy mechanical backup on the rear doors like there is in the front. Imagine trying to remove a panel to find the hidden release while the car is on fire. Or imagine your friend or a kid trying to find it to get out. Horrible design.

Hiding the mechanical latch likely replaces the child safety lock
