Rivian buy back: what should my next vehicle be?

Hey!
I’ve lurked here for many years, but my time with Rivian is coming to an a sad but optimistic end.

After 11 different trips to the service center and over 4 months of SC stays, Rivian is buying back my R1T. I can’t trust it anymore. I still love the thing but I won’t be holding the bag when the warranty is up.

looking for an SUV- anyone like me who has made the jump, or if you HAD to jump….In which vehicle would you land? Don’t say Tesla.

I would not buy our R1S again, and we just bought it.

If I were to buy another EV suv, it would be the BMW IX, followed closely by the new Audi SQ6.

Neither of them are off road worthy, but the build quality and availability of service is so much better than Rivian.

Otherwise, I’d wait for the scout EV, or if you have the money, look out for the new Land Rover EV.

for ICE, you have a ton to chose from.

If you don't buy an R1S (I understand what you went through, I probably wouldn't either in your situation) the only two other EV's that get me excited would be a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo or a Mercedes G 580.

The RS6 and the Taycan Turismo do interest me.... Don't know if the wife would let me get a wagon. But I might anyway.

After having so many service issues, I don't think I can stomach the risk of buying a Land Rover.

I like the looks of the audi Q models, just need to drive one. Might even try to stretch into an RS Q8.

I got the wind trim, since that's the highest you can go with the bench seat in the second row (I have a dog, so the captain's chair makes things more challenging, so a bench was must). I then paid $1,000 for the HP boost to get it to the power of the GT-Line trim. The actual GT trim has not been released yet for the EV9.

I do not want to derail the thread, but I can go into extensive detail as to why my EV9 ownership was so short. The car rarely detected my phone (or apple watch) as key. I would try and start it and it just kept saying "no key detected". It also has a fingerprint reader that was more hit than miss. You would have to set one pedal drive EACH time you got in as it default to cruising. The app was super laggy and I could not use the remote HVAC controls. Unlocking the car from the app took an eternity. Proximity sensors are more hit than miss. If you treat it like a traditional car with a keyfob in hand and don't use the app, then maybe it would be ok? Was still super annoying though. Can't recommend it. Maybe once Kia figures out the software, as the chassis was great, but on its current iteration, it was the most annoying car I've ever owned.

Oh man that’s a rough experience. I think you had a bum car. PAAK etc typically works flawlessly. Remote AC etc works. But, your experience is your experience.

I will say that the GT Line is very quick.

Kia service is still a soft spot. Gotten better especially if you know their pressure points.

I came from a 2014 4-Runner. It’s crossed my mind to simply go back but there’s no way I’ll be happy with that 4.0 V6 that felt slow BEFORE I owned an R1T…

Purchase the 5th Gen 4-Runner TRD Off-Road or the Limited (for more luxury) and add a Magnuson Super Charger.

You could always consider picking up a low mileage used R1T. You would be able to see it's service history beforehand so you would know if it's a "trouble" vehicle. I sold my 2023 R1T last Oct, it had 4K miles on it and had never been back to Rivian even once for any issues. The prospective buyer was able to see the service records and scooped it up at a good savings over new and it still has plenty of warranty left on every component.

How do you get a hold of a vehicle's service history? I've been looking to buy a used R1T. Thanks

Seriously, you should get another Rivian. It is the best vehicle in its class, and you unfortunately got a bad one. But most people have had very few issues. I think you'll probably have better luck with #2.
