I have a R1T with about 50K on it. I absolutely love my truck but the minimal range of under 300 miles has been quite limiting on fly fishing trips through Wyoming & Montana. I kept my old 4Runner for these long distant trips with little access to chargers. I just put a deposit on a Scout that will have this option. But the Rivian really is my perfect vehicle except for the range issue. Is the any info out there on whether Rivian might consider this option in the future??

Never with RJ at the helm. It doesn't vibe with his ethos...

For now, Rivian has been clear that they are only focused on ev's. I highly doubt we'll ever see a gas engine extender in a Rivian. It's more likely they'll add an extender battery for more range.

That's what I was thinking unfortunately. While I respect the purist attitude from RJ, there's a huge market out there that would love this option. I'm one of them!

That would be nice. I'm just trying to figure out my next vehicle with the technology available in 2-3 years.

Scout will have it, if they do actually make it all the way to market. It's the only correct way to do a plug in hybrid IMHO. But most people who buy it, are doing it out of range anxiety and never really needed to lug around the gas generator and small tank of fuel.

Toss one of these in the Bed, it's less expensive than "upgrading" :CWL: https://amzn.to/4k1yRKh or https://amzn.to/4gOH8yu

I'd be shocked if Rivian adds that option based on its mission and everything RJ has said up till now. With Rivian, you'll likely need to wait for battery tech to improve or some type of efficiency breakthrough to get 400-500 miles of range with the current battery tech.

Scout might be an option but thats still 2 years away and its TBD if they build what they've been saying they are trying to build.

Hot take here - IMHO plug in hybrids are the worst of both worlds. Trash electric range, worse efficiency, you have to deal with charging, you have to fill up with gas, AND you have to deal with ICE maintenance. To me it makes way more sense to get a full EV or full ICE.

While I agree with you as it applies to traditional hybrids and what most refer to as PHEVs, I do not think that applies to EREVs.

For me, the primary benefit of an EV is the driving experience. With an EREV you get all of the benefits of the EV driving experience with the added convenience of the ability to use the abundant infrastructure and convenience of gasoline when needed. There will be diminishing returns as battery technology improves, but the necessary battery improvements to render EREV obsolete are still 5-10 years out at least.

Scout Harvester seems like a great fit for you.

Not going to happen IMO. Scout is your best bet. It looks like a Rivian if you squint hard enough!

I have a hard time understanding how it is a good idea to constantly haul around and maintain a gas engine that is only useful 5-10 days a year. But I also totally get how great it would be on those 5-10 days that you used it.

I think the perfect solution is a portable generator that fits in the frunk that you can RENT. Extra range when you need it, without sacrificing cargo volume/weight/efficiency when you don't.

No one makes it, and probably no one ever will. But I really wish someone would.

We're a solid state battery away from never needing the range extender anyhow. If you can't swing it with the R1T, maybe try the Scout.... but even the Scout will probably discontinue the range extender with solid state.

We're using NCM batteries with 270 wh/kg battery density right now. Solid state are around 500 wh/kg density. Imagine the 131 kWh battery becoming a 260 kWh battery with the same weight.

If a 800v Rivian with 700 miles of range that could be charged in 30 minutes existed.... would you care about that stinky gas engine still?

Rivian is clearly a pure EV company, that should be immediately self-evident if you watch any of the press interviews with RJ. The company has no ties or roots with the internal combustion engine. Look elsewhere if you are not ready to cut the gas hose. That said, there are people who have already proven off pavement adventures are possible with the Rivian. So what you need to ask yourself is why couldn't you?
