We absolutely love our 2023 Quad R1S - no regrets especially seeing how much 2025 Tri and Quads are coming in at.

While it would be nice to have better cameras and the new light bar that can do cool tricks, it's just not worth the increase in price IMO.

I suppose the biggest thing to ask is how important is Self Driving (Auto Lane, changes, etc...). If important to you, then you really should only be looking at the 2025 models and up. If not, save some cash and get the Quad.

I ordered the quad in 2021 because it was the only option. I've done lots of off-roading, but I think I would have been happy with the dual motor from what I've seen and heard of it.

I'm also a little jelli of the updated computer and sensors --including the much, much better cameras of the Gen2.

To get my point across, if someone offered to trade me a Gen2 Dual for my Gen1 Quad, I'd take it.

I drive my max pack around daily with a 70% charge limit. That's 270 miles. Charge again at 20% and I'm charging half the battery effectively 200 miles. I think I would be frustrated owning a standard pack and being able to use even less. Our gx470 is only good for about 270 miles before getting the urge to look for a gas station. I've always disliked that. My Audi goes 400 miles on a tank. I think 300 mile range is where it's at.

A few weeks ago, I faced the same choice and lucked out! I found a 2024 Quad that was actually cheaper to lease than a 2025 LFP. Leasing made it a no-brainer for me. Even if I were buying and the prices were comparable, I'd probably still go with the Quad, especially with the recent news about LFP batteries not being able to fully charge every day.

I recently made this decision. I ultimately went with the Gen2 R1T standard LFP. But, I’m in Maine and cannot lease, and this is our second vehicle, we have a 7 seater MYLR that gets pretty close to the 330 range they advertise for road trips. I’m sure the quad is cool and the extra range would be nice, but I honestly also didn’t love getting that early of a build with such a new company.

I just lived through this scenario. I wouldn't have gone with a Gen2 dual motor though. I ended up buying a very pristine, super low miles 2023 R1T QM. It would have cost me at least 25k more to do a new dual motor performance, and over 50k more if I had to buy a tri motor max.

I drove the Gen2 dual motor extensively before making up my mind. At the end of the day, the practically new QM made the most sense. Quick as I wanted, pretty good range, and it felt more solid than the Gen2's I drove.

I also lived through the Tesla rug pull on 3 Teslas; Model S long range, Model S plaid and Model 3 long range. I had a Model Y long range but I apparently sold it at peak oil. Wasn't enough to soften the hit on the Plaid much.

For personal use I can't qualify for the tax credit. So now easy way to stack discounts to really make any financial sense. Even running it through my business so I could get a tax credit, the numbers still didn't even remotely add up unless I with something like a dual motor, The performance wasn't what I was looking for. I'd take a bath if I bought a new tri motor or waited for the new quad, and I still liked how the Gen1 felt better.

All the Gen2 "upgrades" really don't move the needle for me, but the decontenting is obvious. They learned from Tesla's playbook there. At the end of the day, I think I hit the sweet spot for performance vs value. I can see where the Gen2 might make sense but at the current prices, it didn't for me.

I have some perspective here as a R1S Gen 2 Dual Standard owner whose truck went into the shop for a week and I got a launch edition R1S as a loaner.

I’d buy the gen 2 again in a heartbeat.

The improved suspension and Adaptive High Beams alone are worth it imo.

The speed of the quad was absolutely thrilling, and the torque vectoring unparalleled. Its stability control is incredible.

And yet, the dual is… just about as good. I’ve yet to experience over/understeer, and some good obstacles on Hell’s Revenge were no match for the dual, even if she did have some tire slip now and again. She found traction and put it to use.

I haven’t read this whole thread yet so if there are specifics you have questions about I’ll read through and speak to them (maybe) but don’t hesitate to ask ?

Personally I would go for the Gen 1, bought one recently after watching a comparison video online showing the differences and they were saying some things just feel cheaper. Originally I really wanted the max battery but my truck took a crap and I jumped on what I thought was a great deal out of Ohio since I was able to get it quickly. I tried to order a max pack but I would have had to wait a month and needed a truck quickly. Found a 24 DM R1S with performance upgrade in glacier white, ocean coast interior, 22" sport dark, Premium Audio, Large Battery and camp speaker for $76 with 5K miles. Coincidentally its going in today for a major repair, and realizing why people complain about the service centers repair times. I was told they will have my truck at least 2-3 weeks.

Nice write up. The thing with LFP though is that they still don’t like to be at 100% all the time. Rivian still recommends the same daily charging limits.
No they don’t. Mine says I should charge to 100% all the time, and it clears my charge limit every week or so and charges to 100% to calibrate.

Interesting. Where does it say that you should charge to 100% all the time?

LFP doesn't like constant 100% charging either...though they can do more cycles than NMC chemistry its still not good for the pack to charge to 100% daily. The flat voltage curve of LFP just needs calibrating by charging to 100% every two weeks or 500mi as recommended in the owners guide.

The owners guide page 257 says at least once every two weeks for standard pack. Rivian will even notify you when you need to do a 100% charge...Tesla should have done that with their standard pack vehicles. Its a better approach to ensure best possible life of the pack.

says the same thing in the center display every time I plug in.

I set it to 90% most of the time so I have regen braking, but it ignores that about once a week.
