Hi all,

It's been a while since I posted but I'm back with some quick and dirty 'stealth camping' on Highway 1 overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

This time around I noticed something with the interior lights while sleeping in the R1S that I either forgot or never noticed before: why can't I manually turn on/off or adjust the cabin lights with the car locked? (here it is in the video)

Imagine you are getting ready to sleep and it's pitch dark. You need to do something in the dark for a second and reach out to the touch sensitive cabin lights. But they won't turn on unless you unlock the vehicle, which will just turn on all lights and blind you anyways.

Is this user error? We had the power on and AC on overnight as well.

If not, then I hope Rivian adds the ability to use the lights with the car locked. If they are worried about people leaving the lights on and forgetting about it, then a simple turn off timer would work as well.

Anyways, please let me know if I am doing something wrong!

If you are interested, here is the full video:

I’m with you. After sleeping in my R1S after hurricane Beryl, I found the controls in Camping Mode to be limited and not intuitive. I kept waking up to find the AC off, until I forced it to stay on through that menu setting. The third row air flow speed also kept resetting. A Rivian engineer who camps needs to spend some time updating the requirements list.

I've slept a lot inside my R1S in Camp mode (though not for a few months now) and yes, I've had the same lighting issue you have. I was hoping it'd get fixed in a software update, but it doesn't look like it has.

I was also having issues with the AC/Heat not actually ACTIVELY heating or cooling in camp mode stay on. Meaning the fan would blow but the compressor wouldn't turn on. I thought it was a problem with my R1S so I put in a service ticket. The tech told me that even with camp mode on, the vehicle still shuts down certain systems if it doesn't detect a person in the drivers seat (pretty stupid for camp mode, right?!?). The tech's solution, was to buckle the seat belt in the drivers seat. I haven't tried it yet, but that would track with the solution I've been doing when the lights or the AC wasn't working -- from the back area where I would sleep, I'd climb up towards the front press down hard on the driver's seat, so it would register as if someone is sitting there. After that the vehicle would 'wake up' (again even while in camp mode set to stay on) then it'd give me full control of the lights again and the AC compressor would kick on.

My other possible solution was to get a USB keyboard light have plug it in the USB port in the back of the headrest, so you could at least have a reading light. However, I haven't tested to see if that's also one of the things that get shut down when it doesn't detect a driver.

If it really is as stupid as the vehicle not detecting someone in the driver's seat in camp mode, then we need to get the Rivian software team on it!

It's a minor thing but would be much appreciated for people like us who sleep inside often.

I personally haven't had issues with the AC turning off, but they need to go through camp mode in general and make it way more intuitive.
