Looks like there are Rivians everywhere here in the Colorado mountains! I saw one on our road and one was at Enginneer Pass today!

Aside from some pics to prove it, when we stopped people were saying ‘first time I saw one here’ and such. But right at the pass we were in an Imogen Pass traffic jam where many ATVs, Jeeps, and my Rivian were waiting on people to pass at the constricted spot at 13,100 feet! As one vehicle passed, the driver and his wife told us ‘ my son makes those (the R1T) in Illinois! He’ll be so excited to see the picture I took of your truck!’ Well that was amazing . Comparable to the scenery!

As an aside, this road is a real challenge off-road. But the R1T with almost 50,000 miles had ZERO problems on it. The driver, on the other hand, barely made it :)

Last strange story of the day : in the morning in Durango, my wife somehow got the rear passenger door to lock BUT with the door open. Yours truly trying to figure out how this happened, did the same thing to the passenger door my pushing the door mechanism. Ack! After a call to Rivian support they figured it out and with a pencil we opened the door lock. The Rivian person said this happens and they are trying to fix the problem. They originally made this possible as a safety service but it’s not working well. So they are planning a change to the programming in an update. So always carry a pencil or pen and use the Rivian support peopleThis person was excellent.

Now back to the road

Great pictures of a great adventure. Thanks for posting.

What is the meaning of the WHE DADA personalized tag?

Our youngest daughter, when she was three, said that as I was driving (a little fast : ) ) over dips near Tucson, AZ one day. It fits the Rivian quite well.

For the benefit of others, can you elaborate on the specific challenges faced on this route?

Imogene is badazz, and the San Juans are the prettiest part of CO. Great pics.

Same everything. Only thing that broke was the rear gate cover piece that I broke taking it off to put on a failed step. My R1T has been flawless. Sorry for all of you who’ve had problems. And I don’t believe in superstitions.

There must have just been a bad run on the 12v batteries at some point. I'm at 54k miles and also original 12v. Literally everything else has been replaced, but the 12v is going strong! ?

Well let’s see…..

We rook the Ouray to Telluride route. Some people recommend the other way but the charger situation is better from Ouray since there are a couple good Fast chargers in Ouray and zip in Telluride

The road is good until Camp Bird Mine after the first four miles or so. Then you get into a rocky forested part of the trail. I mean rocky. In highest setting on K02 tires I still scraped the skid plate. That tells you how rocky.

Then as you gain altitude you start getting into sections with big rock flats on one side of the ‘road’. It’s fun to watch the tilt meters on the screen as you drive. Gets up about 25 degree off camber in spots. That scared the wife…and me. Truck does it in stride.

then it gets steeper and in some spots a wheel loses grip and spins a bit. But the truck carries on with the other wheels. There’s so much power you really don’t need much momentum to get through these parts.

The road is a bit narrow. I didn’t see any larger trucks . Mostly Jeeps and AtVs . These shelf roads are on the more narrow side. Hence why they are called Jeep trails! That narrow and rockiness is what scares folks. But the R1T is not THAT big. I didn’t see and full size trucks - read Ford F150s.

BTW - No CyberTrucks! I couldn’t imagine driving here in one with that horrible visibility forward.

it was fun to see gas powered vehicles lose power with altitude! Some stalked out! Real benefit of an EV!

Lastly, the route is tough since that narrowness makes passing an adventure. We had to back up once to a safe spot. And twice had to three point turn a tight turn. Not as bad as nearby Black Bear Pass, but still fun. The R1T is almost designed for this road. Actually the R1S would be even better with shorter length!

tech details; 2022 R1T Quad on 20 inch wheels and BFG KO2s. We lowered pressure to 38 from usual 51 psi. Built in air pump was way cool using it in Telluride park instead of scrambling for a super busy gas station!

is that enough detail RivianRunner? Now go out and drive this road!

Telluride has 8 250 kW Superchargers right in the village!

The forward visibility isn't the problem a few people have reported. My guess is they are not accustomed to driving off-road. I've never been in a truck that didn't have poor forward visibility when on steep terrain off-road. But the high-resolution camera facing forward is the best I've ever experienced.

Imogen Pass would be over a 2,800 mile round trip for me if I take the easiest route (and I never do). So thanks for the invite, but probably not going to happen, at least not this year.

Anyways, it sounds like a fun route, not too challenging, I probably wouldn't even need to engage the front locking differential, and those tight turns would be fun in a Cybertruck. I would love to see the ICE vehicles struggling at over 12K feet but I don't care to make the long highway drive just for that!

Thanks for the write-up.

Funny that both the Rivian map and PlugShare can’t see the Tesla station you mention. I suspect it’s a level 2 Tesla supercharger not compatible even with the adapter I have.

I did use the Rivian front camera on all those rock drop offs. It helps.

The width of these roads is an issue with all trucks. The R1T seems narrower than an F150 or CT. Actually I’m going to check that! Long wheelbases are also a problem.

Too bad about not being able to go to this part of CO. It’s an off-roaders dream. As you can see all the trailers of ATVs and Jeeps at the starting and end points in these two towns. Not up mention the big business renting them there!
