To add to that, my display mostly shows the cars in front of me (i.e. the ones I can already see with my eyes) and doesn't show much in my blind spot or behind me (i.e. where it would actually be useful).
Gen 1 can only render what’s visible in front of it out the windshield, it only has a single camera up front for ADAS. I agree the rendering is pointless and always has been. It can help “build confidence before a lane change” but you know what can instantly and confidently establish that confidence? Your eyes, and the photons bouncing off of your mirrors directly into them at the speed of light.

It’s pretty cool technology, this new mirror stuff. Super high res and no lag at all! ?

Unless other Rivians are rendering WAY better than mine, the last thing the rendering does is build confidence. Mine regularly shows overlapping vehicles, road lane markings which rapidly flip-flop between two configurations, vehicles directly in front which are shown pointing in a totally different direction, etc. I’d love to be able to replace it with other content in that prime screen real estate.

Ours gets judgey sometimes and turns cyclists into cars, or one time a semi truck!

Same. What I want is for efficiency to be on the left, speed and gear selector on right, and a giant nav map screen in the center. I'm not too interested in what the car thinks is around it unless I'm using cruise control or driver+.

I agree though others may have different priorities. Other cars I’ve driven divide the driver’s display into three zones and let you choose the data to show in each zone. I’m hopeful that Rivian will let us customize this way in the future.

Honestly, the only time I want to see the rendered forward view is during Halloween mode. While not accurate, at least it’s fun!

Brighter lights would help for sure, but with Gen 1 R1T, the backup camera is often caked in mud/slush/salt/etc. when it’s partially blocked, it just becomes a bright peripheral distraction from the mirrors.

I’ve considered trying to plumb my own backup camera sprayer (just haven’t gotten around to figuring out how to route it through the frame, but hoping to before next winter). This would help a lot with the problem. But even then, the image is pretty poor even when not covered, and for those of us who regularly use mirrors, simply being able to turn the screens off with the touch of a button when mirrors have a clearer view would be cool.
My R1S (June ‘23) has a rear camera sprayer. It works when, while in reverse, you long press the rear wiper button to get a spray on the rear window.

I agree, It shows massive errors. The one that gets me is it seems to use radar to find cars that are not there. Noticeably, it will reflect cars off the center divider and show a lane on the other side (where oncoming traffic is) and depict cars driving forward there. I think the radar reflects off the concrete, and thinks it's cars there when it's really cars in front of me that are getting renders in two different lanes at once.

So it lets me know that my car has no idea where the other cars are.

This! I hope you can set it to a red mode while driving at night. There is a good reason older BMWs and Audis chose red as the backlight color.

I also wish you could set it to turn OFF the useless backup camera at night (and fully black out the screen) with a quick button tap when in reverse. It often blinds me more than it helps, and the reverse lights are pretty lackluster, so with the bright screen (often displaying nothing useful, or lit up smudges) in my peripheral, it can be very hard to see sufficiently through the mirrors.
That’s a good point about the back up camera. Putting in brighter lights would help a bunch - not turning up the brightness of the image.

I loved the red monochrome dashes of the old BMWs. Having the ability to turn down the dash brightness to match the luminance of a dark highway was a nice touch.

Back in the Day SAAB had a "night mode" ala fighter jet style... and would dim everything but your speedo

One thing both BMW and SAAB did that I also appreciate/miss is their driver-centric control philosophies (angling the controls towards the driver, all key functions at your fingertips ready to commit to muscle memory).

While the screens allow for infinite flexibility, I just wish Rivian would at least allow you to move more items to the left side (clock, music player, some more quick controls, etc). I also wish you could customize a column to the left side of the screen with user-programmable objects that stayed present at all times (in addition to the pop out drawer, which could also have a column of “custom,” user-selectable buttons).

Unfortunately both the camera view and its brightness are both mandated by federal law, at least to a certain degree. (Some of our cars blow out the brightness on the reverse camera but others don't seem to, so there must be some room for interpretation there)

I do agree with your complaint though; between the blindingly bright but blurry and useless camera view, and the tinted rear glass, I sometimes find myself just putting it into reverse and hoping for the best ;)
That’s wild! I didn’t realize that was a law… I can’t believe the brightness is mandated, since it really seems to be blindingly bright at times, which seems counterproductive if the goal is seeing what’s behind you.

If they went as far as mandating rear cameras being locked on and super bright, I wish they’d also mandated rear camera sprayers so you at least have a chance to see something other than a bright smudge for half the year ? (in my state, anyway).

I know, and I’m very jealous of that! I had an R1S loaner and it was great having a clear view whenever I needed the rear camera. It’s what inspired me to see if I could find parts to add my own to my R1T. It’s doable, tapping off the front windshield washer line, I just have to figure out how to route the line from the frunk area to the tailgate hinge/wire harness area.

I assume they added it to the S because they already had the necessary plumbing there for the rear wiper, so it couldn’t have cost nearly as much to add the camera sprayer as it would for the T. I believe they added it for Gen 2 R1T, which is sweet (but won’t help me, for at least a few more years).

Makes sense that it’s much simpler to add to the R1S. I’ve never had a pickup so wasn’t thinking about that. Glad they added it in the update at least.
