I kinda just want a system that doesn't keep slamming on the F*&#ing brakes when it sees shadows...
Agreed; likely most effectively done with the better cameras/compute/network bandwidth of the Gen 2. I do hope they make some progress with this on the Gen 1s.

Have they confirmed they will stop updates for driver+? Obviously they’ll be focusing their efforts on gen 2 but it seems like something they could still make some progress with. What about mapping out more roads for highway assist? Will they continue to map more roads? Will that be the same database that gen 2 uses?

If there are no updates to Driver +, that will be very disappointing given everything we were told. I’m pretty annoyed even with the discount and lower amount I paid for the truck . Imagine if you paid 100k for a truck and it doesn’t have the same autonomous driving capabilities as a Kia Niro. It’s a good way to lose customers.

I'll still be driving myself 99.999% of the time no matter what they offer.

Based on this I do not think updates will stop, maybe just slow for driver plus.

From the RivianTracker site;

Vehicle Generations
  • Driver+: Comes standard with Gen 1 (model year 2022–2024) vehicles.
  • Rivian Autonomy Platform: Standard on Gen 2 (model year 2025 and onward) vehicles.
Feature Evolution
  • Driver+: Some features, such as Lane Change Assist and Trailer Assist, may be introduced through over-the-air software updates following the start of production.
  • Rivian Autonomy Platform: Includes a broader set of features at launch, with continuous updates planned to enhance capabilities.
Rivian Autonomy Platform+
  • Enhanced Capabilities: Rivian Autonomy Platform+ is a premium version available on Gen 2 vehicles, offering additional features like Lane Change on Command and Enhanced Highway Assist, with expanded road coverage planned for future updates.
  • Availability: Rivian Autonomy Platform+ features will initially be available at no charge on Gen 2 vehicles, with continuous improvements and additions through software updates.

Bummer Gen1 wont get anymore autonomous features, but highly likely RAP would be offered at a price I wouldn’t pay for anyway. I cant justify paying $100/month for FSD on my Tesla, which is way more advanced than RAP, so I certainly cant see paying for RAP. Considering their connection play is 50% more than Tesla’s my bet is RAP comes in at maybe $50/month. I’m fine driving myself plus using basic drivers+ on long highway trips for $0/month.

Your choice - the discussion here is about the actual feature, that many of us want to use.
My 4-year-old X5 has MUCH better ADAS, including full hands-free Traffic Jam Assist, Line changes, etc.

Rivian overpromised and underdelivered in this area, by far.

This led me to say - do not believe what the company (any company) will say they will do in the future.

If you buy the car, check that you are ok with what the car can provide you now. Do not make your decision based on some future feature update. IMHO

Agreed. I had hoped that Rivian was different based on my personal conversations with officers of the company. I thought that we could trust their claims and promises, but I think this is the final straw for me. They are no different/better than any other company. Sad.

Look, it still an ok truck. Refresh is nice, but not worth the upgrade as it still use the same old 400V technology. In 2 years it will be obsolete. Either lease (not good option in Texas as you pay the full tax), or wait.

My personal preference - I probably will wait till I see more options for 800V technology available, this will make roadtrips much more tollerable. I also think I will go back to BMW or similar brand - driving dynamics, steering - all these startups still have a long way to go.

I would think this is just common sense but apparently not.

Many people want to believe in nice things they hear :)

Even now, if you watch Kyle's review of R1 refresh, he talks about Driver+ and how the software will improve it over OTA (he did mention that it is far behind others) Well, he also said the same in the R1T review 2 years ago, and almost no improvements were delivered.

Instead of criticizing Rivian more and mentioning that they really suck in ADAS and must do something about this, he sugar-coated it. Again.

I do wonder how much of that was out of their control and was perhaps a forced pivot due to covid and supply chain issues combined with having effectively no negotiating power as a startup trying to secure parts (especially when it comes to things like cameras, processors, etc). But ultimately, a company has to be profitable and this can and will drive a wedge between action and intent.

Yeah this is what grinds my gears. "OTA updates will make it competitive" is the messaging we've been hearing since the beginning. It's hilarious in the most frustrating way to hear Kyle casually saying Gen2 is going to fork any get OTA updates to be competitive, and that Gen1 won't get the features implied all this time ?
