2024 R1S Dual Motor Large Battery 21"
Hi all,

Just went on a trip from around Sacramento, CA to Pinnacle National Park (~400 miles round trip). Left at 95% charge on a Dual Motor Large Battery. I know this is rather a short trip but I thought I'd share my experiences on charging with home Tesla charger, evgo, and J1772 at a national park.

First leg of the trip was to the Bay Area to charge at a relative's Tesla charger overnight. I used an adapter off of Amazon and got ~15 miles/hr. This got me back up to ~90%. I was hoping this was enough to get to Pinnacles and back, if their charger did not work out.

Once I got to the park I can't say I was surprised that only 1 of the 2 available J1772 chargers were working. Charging process itself wasn't too bad, although I had to get yet another app. Charged for 4 hours for a total of 27kWh (72 miles). Now I was confident I would make it through the trip.

I stayed 2 nights at the campground and had a fridge plugged in during the day and light AC at night. Some light cooking with the car. It was so warm when we visited that we slept in the R1S with the liftgate open.

On the way back I stopped at a evgo fast charger for 30 insurance miles. Got home with ~40 miles left.

Overall I felt pretty confident the whole trip that I would not run out of juice. If I were to repeat this trip I would get a site that has electricity hookup just in case. Here's to hoping some of the lesser known national parks get better charging infrastructure!

Here's a video if anyone's interested:

Good stuff, but what about pics of the park? I believe that’s the newest NP around and I get the sense it isn’t highly visited so hope you had a great time.

Definitely didnt't seem to be highly visited when we were there. We are pretty new to documenting our travels, but there should be some good shots in the video!

Oddly enough we went (in R1S) 2 months ago, and it was VERY busy so much so they wouldn't allow cars up to the eastern trailheads past 8am.

We live in central San Jose and went without charging, 95% on departure.

There is a EA and TSC in Gilroy. (I read a thread here that the Gilroy RAN has been canceled.)

We got there on a Sunday and it was moderately busy, nothing crazy. I think the issue is the shuttle system is still not running and the parking lots west of the visitor center are so small that it fills up early morning and they close the roads.

What's the company behind those Level 2 chargers?

Got another q for ya as I keep watching these! How is the seal around the R1S? Them mosquitos are a big no go and i feel like my repellent and thermacell budget is already through the roof. if theres as much as a coin hole gap i feel like the tent might be a deal breaker for me personally.

Thanks for checking out the vids!

It's definitely not a tight seal, but I haven't seen any mosquitos get through the gaps. It covers a good portion of the sides of the car just past the liftgate, so it's unlikely a bug would fit through.
