I am 1st in line for a Lexus Overtrail+ and have decided it will not fit my needs as well as a Rivian R1S. If someone has a Rivian R1S 2023 or 2024 in either Dual Motor or Performance Dual Motor with large or max pack I would be willing to trade Overtrail+ for it. I would not consider black interior or blue or limestone exterior colors. DM me if you have interest. Thanks for considering.

Have you looked at the Rivian shop to see any available R1S in the specs you want? I am sure you can find something.

@snowboarder777 yes, can afford pre 2022 price increase, but not current retail. :-(

Ahh gotcha. The Lexus still looks pretty sweet I was considering one but got the new 2024 R1S with the lease deals and I'm loving it.

I'm curious what made you change your mind on the Lexus. Also, are you looking at the used car mkt? All the best.

@iansriv Thanks! I'm considering used. Under $80k is my max budget. I drove the R1S today at our local service center and love it. I was excited about the new GX, but really think there is nothing like the R1S. I've owned 2003, 2011, and 2022 GXs. They are very dependable and I'm sure I'll be happy with the GX550, but really love the on-road handling and acceleration of the R1S.
@snowboarder777 congrats on the lease deal! Enjoy!

The R1S lease deals are quite good at the moment. Perhaps that could be a consideration.

Will be a pain, but you should take delivery and sell the GX. They have a year long wait (especially on the Overtrail), having one available early might net you enough to buy a new R1S ?

You should drive both, I have a R1T and these two vehicles are just not comparable.

The GX550 is made in Japan, like the LX600 but smaller. Their design spec is essentially for 25 years of service in a third world country.

The R1S is an EV skateboard design SUV made in Normal, IL. They are a startup having all the startup issues we talk about on this site, exactly what all startups like Tesla went through.

From a strictly quality standpoint the Lexus has 70+ years of making this truck albeit in different versions, platforms, engine designs. Rivian has <5 years. The GX may never need a service call outside regular maintenance, while the R1S will likely need some to adjust items missed in production and delivery.

I love my R1T, but if I wanted the GX, no way the R1S would fill that need. Likewise if I wanted an R1S, the GX wouldn't fill those needs. Too different, I would drive it before you decide.

Once upon a time this reply was correct, buts it’s just not anymore. The GX550 is built on the TNGA-F platform, meaning it’s a badge engineered Prado/4Runner (not the GA-F of the 300/LX600). It’s the light-weight version, and also has the 3.5TT V6 that has shown questionable reliability in the Tundra/Sequoia. Will it still go 200k plus - probably. Is it the ultra-reliable and overbuilt Land Cruiser of the past - nope. This is coming from someone who has owned 9 Land Cruisers and now drives an R1T.

Buy what you want OP, don’t buy into this argument is my only point here.

@ndmiller and @Tucker74 I agree with both of your takes. the R1S will not be the 100% trouble free owner experience that I'm used to. I have worries about the GX's new platform and engine, but I'm mostly stuck on two things-1.) The R1S IMO drives like a nimble sports car with all the camping and off-road fun of a GX. The R1S camping video that was posted recently in the Sierras really sealed it. Sleeping in the R1S with climate control and easy cooking makes it an absolute joy. (I'm getting soft in my old age!) and 2.) I'm not sure there is a vehicle that is safer on the road than the R1 series. There is no data yet on the GX550's safety, but I would guess it will be very good, but not as good as the R1. @iansriv I don't want to consider a lease. I usually own vehicles for years. I had my 2003 GX for 8 years and my 2011 GX for 9, but thanks for the suggestion.

My R1S has been trouble free. That's just a sample size of 1 but it's enough for me. Sounds like you really like the R1S. I've never leased so I understand. The lease will get you the tax break and you can buy it after. Please, research the forum as there is a lot of info on this.

Same here trouble free R1S after a few minor issues were fixed on first service. Can't you just cancel your Lexus order and get an R1S used or something? Why would you need to buy the Lexus first and trade?

All good reasons why the Rivian R1S is a much better choice than GX 550.

I was cross shopping GX550 and after sitting in one I decided its just not for me. It feels bland, interior is nothing exciting, Overall feels smaller and tighter than R1S and just not as capable or fun to drive. Don't even get me started on the cost to fuel a GX550 with premium gas for 5 years - 10 years.

1 thing I would recommend is looking at what your state tax implications are for a lease buyout. I 100% agree with buying the car and keeping it for 8 years - 10 years instead of leasing it for 2 years - 3 years is typically a smart financial decision. I personally purchased my vehicle because I was eligible for $7,500 tax credit after signing a binding agreement.

Currently everyone can get a $7,500 tax credit if they lease doesn't matter on income or sticker price. You can buy the vehicle right away after you complete your lease and still get the $7,500 price reduction. There is a $895 acquisition fee you pay but the $7,500 easily covers that.

If you finance, you can get a $3,750 tax credit if you keep it below $80,000 and meet the income requirements.

The main thing you need to look at is how are taxes treated on a lease and then lease buyout. With Texas or should I say Taxes you have to pay tax on the full vehicle purchase price when you lease and then again on the residual if you decide to buy it. Leasing doesn't make much sense in Texas but in other states where you only pay tax on the lease amount and than just the residual if you decide to buy it out, it makes much more sense to lease and take the $7,500 EV credit.

Something to keep in mind if you want to get the full $7,500 and also buy the vehicle to keep for longer term.

Finally the Quad Motors right now have amazing monthly lease rates because Chase / Rivian is buying down the interest rate and keeping residuals very high. So keep that in mind if you plan to buy the quad motor out. Typically residuals are between 62% - 67% for Rivians on a 3 year lease.

If I was buying a Rivian today and did not have a binding agreement in place, I would lease and then perform a buyout if I wanted to keep it long term. Since I want a quad motor and they have high residuals / low interest rate. I would just lease for 3 years with 36,000 miles and then decide at the end of the lease if I want to buy the quad motor for residual value or go into the market and buy one for cheaper if market values are lower than my residual.

Cash amount due at signing includes $7,000 capitalized cost reduction (includes $1,000 deposit), first monthly payment amount, $895 acquisition fee, and $0 security deposit. Tax, title, license, registration, and lessor documentation fees are additional fees due at signing. Not all customers will qualify for security deposit waiver. Offer includes upfront capitalized cost reduction of $7,500 provided by the lessor.
