Hi there,
I have no idea how they can start production of the R3 before 2029. Does anyone have an idea? If the production will start in 2029 that is 5 years from now and a lot of things can happen. Firstly, the vehicle which looks and performs great now, in 5 years perhaps it won't be as great, considering that other car makers will come out with their own ev vehicles. I feel that 5 years is a lot of time to keep the R3 as great as it looks now and I also feel that the R3 will perhaps be the most important vehicle in terms of revenues.

They are taking a similar approach as tesla did, but with the knowledge and hindsight as well as preparation from the beginning, skipped the initial roadster step.

They first released their halo product the R1T, which was shortly after followed by the R1S, delivering a high quality product with all the bells and whistles, as well as proving their concept.

The R2 is going to be their "Model 3" moment. where they use their manufacturing, and economies of scale to sell a vehicle with mainstream appeal. Right now they are shooting for Early 2026.

The R3 is built on the same platform as the R2 so because of this, there won't be a the very time consuming aspect of building yet another platform, and instead building off that preexisting platform. I wouldn't be surprised with their preorder format, if the cars are being actively developed simultaneously, with them giving the R2 first to market and staggering the R3 by a bit to further take advantage of those economies of scale.

While i don't really see the R2 moving up much, i don't think the R3 will follow 3+ years after.

Thank you for the reply. I see but it still doesn't make sense how they can produce the R3 in Normal. If they can produce R1S, R1T, Vans, R2 and R3 in Normal would be great but with 150k (maybe just above 200K) production limit of the plant I don't see how that can happen. Therefore the R3 needs to wait for the GA plant to be built and that is at least 2 years from the moment they start.

Expanded production capacity is supposed to be 215K. It sounds like just initial R3 might be in Normal, with it expanding to the GA factory.

My guess is the GA plant never happens and IL throws more money at Rivian to expand plant. This site looks like it can easily be expanded to accommodate 500k+ units per year. It would cost 1/2 to 1/3 the money to expand this site vs a new site.

I understand that total capacity will be 215k but I still find it difficult to see how they can make those many models under one roof. Nevertheless I hope you are right.

No doubt, looking at the land around makes perfect sense.
