Is Xpel wrap worth it? After nearly 30,000 miles... probably not!

I have both the R1S and R1T. Both have full stealth wrap and windows tinted.

12-18 months later, both have had to replace windshields and therefore re-tint. Both have had minor scratches with no paint damage, but can't get scratches out of the wrap. Both have had door dings or other items that have torn the wrap and will need to be replaced.

So, for a year of protection, I don't think the wrap is actually worth it. BUT...if you are just looking for a bad-ass look to the factory color then maybe it is worth it. I guess it depends on the long-term payout of the wrap repair.

I wont keep my R1S out of the warranty, so I skipped PPF, but did a full paint correction, tint, and Xpel ceramic coating.

I think any PPF is absolutely worth it. Think how many chips or dings you would have had without it. Of course, major damage will always get through, but you at least stand a chance of saving your paint most of the time. I'd rather replace a panel of PPF than have anything repainted with an attempt to color match

Sure, XPEL won't protect against everything and is itself susceptible to being damaged (hopefully instead of the paint). Question is whether it has prevented any smaller chips, etc over that time? That might best be answered by someone without PPF after 30k miles.

I agree that PPF has saved a few chips and scratches. If cost was the only factor, I could easily repaint the car every 3-5 years for the cost of the PPF. I am still waiting for the single-panel replacement quote.

My original plan was to keep the Rivians for about 3-5 years and rip off the PPF when getting ready to sell. This would hopefully show a pristine paint job.

I agree it's usually not worth it, but the other way to look at it is those dings would have reached your paint if it weren't for the PPF. ?‍♂

Worth it is really subjective. If your OCD like me then it's worth it. If you want to use the truck and have best possible (not perfect) protection then it's worth it.

If you think you will get extra on resale or that it will protect against everything. Then you may not see it as being worth it.

I went full PPF on my T (Gloss) and my wife opted for no PPF. I ceramic coated her S myself. I already see little microscopic spots that would absolutely drive me nuts when washing it but from 10 feet still looks immaculate. It's a large investment and not an easy decision.

When folks ask me. I always say if you have the budget and you want the best possible protection then go for it.

Unless you’re getting your car painted at Maaco, you aren’t getting an R1S painted for anywhere near the price of Xpel.

The only vehicle I wish I had added paint protection to is the one vehicle that I didn't add it to. :-/ So yes.. it is worth it.

I think I see your point. I've had a few dings - I just apply touch up paint and it's good to go. Maybe proper blend in paint job somewhere down the line, but for now I have actually "unseen" those dings.

If this were my PPF, I would probably need to reapply the PPF on each panel since it stands out a bit more.

Dings aside, I have hit a few minor trails, and I've dreaded paint scratches everytime. For those that hit the trail quite a bit, PPF is a huge plus

Thank you for sharing. No one can say yours aren’t well used lol. I can’t imagine having damage like you’ve had driving 10x that amount of miles.

I coudln't justify the cost on the whole vehicle but did the full front protection and tail gate done for $1600. To me that was very reasonable. Unfortunately for me, I already have 3 gashes that went throught he PPF but like others have said, I assume it's protected from many other rock chips up front.

Funny thing is someone did ding my gear gard/truck bed with their door, and the cost to fix it (came out of their insurance) was $8900!

So I got two quotes to re-wrap the doors. Cost is between $350 and $450 per door. Not too surprised.

anyone do this before? Does a new wrap look different than the older section? Meaning will I end up just re-wrapping the whole thing? Glad it’s a utility vehicle and not for show!

That’s in the ballpark of what I paid to get my front passenger door have a crease dent PDR repair, PPF removed and reapplied, and ceramic reapplied. I was off roading and trying make room for an ATV on a narrow trail and rubbed against a tree. Still annoyed with the ATV. Much smaller and had a lot of room behind him.

Anyway, I personally find PPF well worth it for me. Paint is going to be pristine in several years and such repairs are far less expensive than a repaint and blend.

YMMV
