The plug kit looks great - I never thought about being able to plug my own tires (but have had them plugged at the tire shop multiple times). A couple of questions:
  • I vaguely recall them covering the plug with some sort of adhesive...The kit doesn't seem to have any. Is it necessary or am I thinking about an inside-out plug where they pulled the tire from the wheel and plugged it from the inside?
  • I'm an R1S owner without the spare yet - which means I don't have a jack. I have the 20" AT's - if I got a screw or nail in the tire could I put the plug in without jacking up the vehicle?
  • Do you keep a Leatherman or another set of pliers with your kit for removing foreign objects?
  • What else don't I know? (My wife has a very long list...)
Thanks for your patience with these questions!

The kit I mentioned doesn't need any glue....but regular plugs do typically use a rubber cement type adhesive.

The plugs can be installed without removing the wheel. You just have to position the tire in a way that you can get to the puncture. It's really easy on a front wheel, but completely possible on a back wheel too.

And yes, I keep a set of pliers with my kit to pull out the nail/screw/whatever in the tire. Some of the Stop & Go kits come with pliers, but I have the small kit, which does not.

It's pretty much that simple. You already have onboard air to fill the tire back up, so if you have one of these kits, you can pretty much fix your own flats quickly and easily. Here's a video showing exactly how easy it is to use:

Discount tire or most tire shops will dismount the tire and patch from the inside for free or a nominal fee, which is the correct way to repair a vehicle tire puncture of this type.

Plugs or emergency tire repair kits (mushroom, plug, etc) are for flats or loss of air with an obvious hole that need to be plugged in order to get somewhere to do a more permanent repair. Can a plug be permanent, yes, but they can also fail, probably not at an opportune time.

This is all true, but I've never once had a plug fail and I've had a ton of tire punctures that I've plugged. So for my purposes, a plug is a permanent repair.

It's kind of ridiculous, but I purchased a new house in a new development. My house was the second house built, so I've gotten flats over and over again from all the construction vehicles dropping nails and screws in the street. It's frustrating because every tire on every vehicle has one or more plugs in it and we've been dealing with his for more than 5 years now. Luckily, the last house is currently being built, so this shouldn't be an issue for much longer. My tires are all swiss cheese though.

This is what I and many others do from another thread on a nail, screw, tack, etc. If it has gone flat on the road, you want to lift that wheel a bit.

1. Jack Pucks to lift the flat tire off the ground. Easy to rate to find screw.
2. Bottle Jack (super simple to use)
3. Repair Kit.
4. Onboard Air, fill the tire and head to your tire center or onwards with your trip, until you can get it patched.

Yeah, my wife and daughters drive all the vehicles in our house, not with the risk or getting my hands dirty.

It's all good, Tire Repair litigation is a HUGE business, so if the worst happens at least someone in your family will be a multi-millionaire.

My second week of ownership saw a flat on one of my AT tyres. It looked like an RPG shrapnel. Tyre was gone gone. Put on a new one. Two months later-same tyre was flat. This time it was pluggable. I bought the Discount Tire warranty. I'm watching my neighbour. I think he's jealous and damaging my tyres.

? A link from a law firm? Really? Are you an ambulance chaser too?

Like I said, I've plugged tons of tires for decades. Never one failure. And a failure on a tire plug means it will still lose air.

But you do you. If a puncture means a new tire, terrific there kiddo.

Plugged tires in some pretty difficult spots; even stacking them in sidewalls. That's usually temporary to get home but I've had a single sidewall plug last the life of the tire. Through the tread lasts for the life usually. They are vulcanizing but using some glue helps insert them. Given the choice though I go to a tire shop and have an umbrella/mushroom put in from the inside.
