What a perfect day and a perfect vehicle for it. It went 100% smooth if I ignore the Nav issues.
422 miles, with a 7,000 ft elevation change I used 265 kWh ... so an average of 1.59 kWh.
Used 2 different EA chargers for 171 kWh and $88.85 for a total of 95 minutes
Some some of that EA charging was not necessary and could have lowered the time, we went to eat on the final charge, I set to 100% but didn't need it, just didn't want idle charges and didn't want to leave in the middle of the meal to move vehicle, so knowing it slows down at 80%, I just bought myself some time... 8 plugs, I was only one there, so didn't feel bad trickling charge while eating
Biggest thing is the Rivian just LOVES the mountains; Effortless climbing, handles curves like a champ; It was such a pleasure to DRIVE
South of Phoenix we have 2 options to go up to Sunrise skiing, both come together in Show Low which has an EA fast charger at City Hall (can walk to a few places from there, but not super convenient), the 2 routes are Payson or Globe: Payson is bigger highway more populated route; Globe smaller highway, stretch through the Apache Reservations is 70 miles of not 1 roadside stop and shorter because it's steep up over and down the mountain. but shorter miles for sure. Went went Payson route up, Globe back.
Started at home at 99% charge and 10,203 miles on odometer
Payson route is bigger highway that is more gradual through the mountains and a lot more options for civilization (food, convenience, etc) but since it takes a more gradual approach it's longer by some miles. This stretch is where you have DRIVE it, the Rivian is fun to drive up and down the windy mountain roads. I tried using Cruise control and that was a MESS... I didn't enjoy it, had it set at 73 and it would either enter a turn faster than I wanted or even more annoying slow to like 50 on it's own and then be slow to ramp back up, felt like I was annoying the other cars around me. take off cruise and 1 pedal drive this truck and it is smooth and enojyable in the mountains.
The EA Charger is in a strip mall and for us in the morning, plug in grab a coffee at the Starbucks you can walk to seemed convenient... got there with 10,291 miles and 46% charge; so it was 88 miles from my home and used 53% of my charge. Walked to Starbucks, family used restrooms, charged to 80% in 25 minutes, didn't even feel like we waited. 50 kWh and $26.40 for EA
Show Low This is a nice stretch of road, beautiful forested mountains, cruise control worked great here, lots of straights, low traffic; could appreciate Northern Arizona. The EA charge is at City Hall, was clean safe, well maintained. Arrived with 10,421 miles and 35%; so again it was an 88 mile stretch but only used 45% charge; Being Saturday everything was closed, no bathrooms nothing super convenient to walk to; could walk 5 or 10 minutes to a McD's or KFC but didn't want or need to, just wanted to get onto our final desition.. so charging to 79% was 32 minutes and it felt like we were waiting; did talk to a nice gentleman in an F150 lightning, he can plug and pay with EA, he saw me fumbling with my app... internet at that spot was SLOW and kept timing out trying to find the charger on the phone... then it kept declining my payment (had put $50 on the EA app in Payson... still had $24 in EA balance... so didn't realize it must have a minimum amount?? anyway I added more to the EA app and it started) . 62.4 kWh and $32.26 to EA
Sunrise Ski Park this was the destination; another nice pleasant stretch through some nice towns like Pinetop, but easy drive with Cruise control. Arrived and knew not much of the park was open, but it was a great day with the kids. Picked up our season passes, tried out our new skis. BEST Part was opening the gear tunnel and having the kids sit and put on their ski boots, and put there shoes in there for afterwards. The parking lot is muddy and slushy. So having that seat and storage makes this an AMAZING ski truck. Arrived with 10,421 and left with 55% (arrival excitement I did NOT check the arrival % so not sure how much drained while skiing, which was a big data point I wanted) so 42 miles from Show Low and used 24%
Show Low we headed back to the Show Low charger arrived with 10,463 miles and 45% battery. So 42 miles and only 10% battery, assume most of this was because it's downhill and some of the loss in my arrival number above may have been drained while skiing. 24% SL to SR 10% SR to SL. Anyway after a day on the slopes, plugged it in and walked up to get some food and stuff before heading home. After 38 minutes we had 88% charge and could make it all the way home from here. I had confirmed on Google Maps and ABRP that Show Low through Globe to home is 165 miles... overall downhill, so with over 220 miles range I was confident to head home. This is the beginning of the annoying Nav Issues part of the story. (see below). EA 58.9 kWh and $30.19
Show Low to Globe This is an AMAZING DRIVE, just beautiful and stunning scenery, the road was in spectacular shape (brand new) and I saw another car about every 5 miles. This is mostly 1 lane each way (some passing areas), perfectly paved, wildly steep and curvy. The Rivian is such a blast to drive on this. 1 pedal driving and feel totally in-tune with the vehicle. at one point I did get the "regen limited" warning but not sure what drives this, battery temp, motor temps all were very normal and battery by that point was down. But anyway, this was a fun road to come home on and beautiful mountains, and valleys and breathtaking views. I think I would like to check this route going UP next time, the charger is behind a restaurant, if they have breakfast, then this may be a great option. Got to Globe with 10,549 miles and 55% so it was an 86 mile run using 33% battery. With 55% battery I was confident to skip this charge and just head home. everyone is tired, and ready to be home after a long day. Still nervous about Globe to Show Low route going up the mounting, if used 33% coming down, I worry about how much going up. I guess as long as it's NOT 80% then should be alright.
NAV ISSUES: this is where the Rivian Nav started having issues. On the way up, I plugged in Sunrise, added Payson and Show Low Waypoints and it worked as I would expect. I was surprised it picked the Payson route (Google Maps gives you the choice and says "which"), but thought maybe it was like me, and take well traveled route with multiple high speed charges along it to get me there... so I didn't think much of it. Heading home I put in home and it wanted me to go to Payson Charger not any option to the Globe charger (which it was showing on the map). So I clicked it as a Waypoint and headed out. Now I am at the Globe charger and the Nav thinks I am going to charge. I do not and I end the session. plug in my HOME and it calculates I need to charge and routes me BACK through Show Low and Payson ... saying over 5 hrs and 2 charging events I would be home... I was 80 miles away with 160 range... I know my way home from here so I started driving and it kept Recalcing and wanting me to head back. I tried ending and restarting and kept same, then I would end and restart and it would say "lack of chargers are you sure you want to continue" and still would recalc me back through Payson. I tried editing the plan and it didn't give me any options. It's like it didn't know the highway I was on went through, it was a very annoying end to a great trip. Eventually it started recalcing me down towards Tucson and back with same "lack of chargers" warning ... I just drove. Once I got closer to the cities and we stopped for an Ice Cream top up, I tried again and it was back to normal. Nav needs help, It does a lot to calculate routes and that is appreciated, but without anyway to override based on human logic it's gonna lack my confidence.
HOME: 10,625 miles and 27% so the final 76 miles and charged back to 85% was 75kWh and $6.29 ... in my trip totals I added in 19 kWh since I started at 99% (so total 10,203 miles 99% to 10,625 99% was 422 miles and 265 kWH 1.59 miles/kWh and $95.14. Up to Sunrise was 1.5 mils/kwh and down was 1.7... Show Low to Globe as 1.93 miles/kwh. All Purpose, normal height, high regen entire trip never touched a ride setting; 4 people, full sets of ski gear (boots, helmets, skis, poles clothes). Did not lack for space, very comfortable trip.
Summary: SUCCESS. very comfortable road tip vehicle. All gear out of the cabin, plenty of space for everyone. Need more cup holders. I drive too fast for good mileage, but this vehicle makes that easy. The EA chargers were well maintained, worked, SL charger could have better internet, but was passable.
