very pleased that this can be fixed OTA. I really was dreading having to wait for service or having to take the car in.

To me this is a no harm no foul kind of situation. I still commuted in my r1t, wasn’t stranded anywhere, and I’m not put at an inconvenience to get it fixed. (Assuming the fix isn’t botched :CWL:)

No I had to take it into service for the update. It was bricked there and took about 6 weeks to get back. Even then, there were things that they had to go back in and update (like 2nd key no longer worked). I think I saw where US ID.4s will be getting their first OTA update soon.
I hate to nitpick, but if you had to bring it in, it wasn't an OTA (over-the-air)...

I never said in my case with the ID.4 it was an OTA, just said it was an update. From a perspective of an update failing, it no makes difference....failed physical vs. failed OTA update sucks and there should be safeguards in place so the vehicle still remains functional. In the case of Rivian, it looks like there was a fail safe in which you could at least still drive (was this by design or just a coincidence?). For my ID.4 it was completely bricked and completely inoperable for about 6 weeks.

LOL I'm on with support chat now and they are scheduling me a mobile service appointment for the OTA fix as it's needed per chat. I trust that's not true and the email that just went out is correct. Hilarious.

Rivian R1T R1S Software Update 2023.42.0 is out (⚠️ UPDATE: OTA fix rolling out today 11/15/23) 1700074296708

Boom! Very well written email.

I from want to wait all the people asking to inspect the source code and be compensated with free Rivians for life, but I'm personally very satisfied with this. Was it a pain sure, but I guarantee you none of the legacy automakers would have ever solved something this quickly (not that they would have ever done iterative software updates OTA anyway)

Looks like the entire event will clock in around 48 hours total

Seems a bit like this is all happening in realtime. The front line support folks are likely learning about this as we are.

Really hope this OTA goes OK for all those effected.

I've been on both sides of these issues in the past as a developer with an OTA updatable product and as a consumer.

Just got this email:

As the leader of our software organization, I want to update you on our progress with the infotainment issue. Our team now has a solution in place, and we plan to roll it out later today.

How will Rivian resolve it?
You’ll receive an over-the-air update (2023.42.02) which will restore full functionality to your vehicle’s infotainment system. It will also include the vehicle improvements planned as part of our latest software release.

What do I need to do?
We recommend enabling push notifications on your Rivian app. You’ll be prompted through the app to update your vehicle software once it’s available.

If you experience any issues updating your vehicle software through your phone, please reach out to Rivian Service Support at 1‑855‑748‑4265.

Personal note
Our number one priority is getting this resolved for owners. For those who’d like more background on what happened, we inadvertently distributed an incorrect software build to around 3% of Rivian owners. Within 90 minutes of launching, we had identified this infotainment issue and paused the roll out to further vehicles. From there, our team was able to rapidly design the remote fix you’ll receive later today.

We’re committed to building great products and your experience matters tremendously to us, so we’re using this moment to deeply evaluate our process and quality checks to prevent this from happening again.

Thanks again for your patience and we’ll send an update once the fix is deployed.

I had a software update on the ID.4 in the VW dealership a few weeks ago, and it also bricked five modules and took them 16 days to rectify. It was not the 2.4 to 3.0 update. My ID.4 already came with the 3.0.1, so this was a different service-action update. This was not an OTA update, though. VW is definitely very cautious about releasing their first OTA update in the US.

I absolutely love my truck. I'd say it's my #1 non-living thing in my life. There are issues that existed since pickup, but I've ignored them all as it's absolutely an amazing machine. I have an R1S reservation to replace my wife's car with the plan to be a 100% Rivan household. However, I'm having a real hard time justifying that after this week. My love for my truck remains. It's not my truck's fault this happened and I'm going to keep it for years and years with zero love lost. However, I can't say I'm in love with the Rivan as a company. They lost my trust this week. At this point I'm more upset about the lack of communication than the original error.
We are 100% with you. We love our dear Opal (R1T). We driver her every day and have had no issues. We tend to keep stuff. We have a 67 year old Thunderbird that we have had for 40 who that has become jealous because he no longer gets to go out every day.
