Nothing in life is easy. Search Texas on Plugshare for 50 kw chargers and read The reviews at chargers located in the parking lot of a car dealership.

Ok, I'll give you a free one to see what I am talking about. Start from the bottom closest to Monterrey, Mexico and work your way up. I promise the first one you hit after you cross the border will be free. Check the reviews and the pricing. They both show free. Now keep clicking all over Texas and try to find another one that is free.

My hunch is they want you to come to the dealership and while you're stuck there, they want you to look at their new vehicles to purchase. Cheap way to get customers to come in to the dealership lot who have disposable income.

Not going to be a money thing as you can buy two very nice Tacomas for the cost of an R1T. How long does it take to buy $40K in gasoline? 16 years?

Don't forget oil changes, transmission, brakes, spark plugs, belts, coolant... (I had to search "ICE car maintenance, I've forgotten how much there is to do to them)

Competition is a good thing and will continue to push prices down as more station are built out and renewable energy is deployed. EA, EVGO, Chargepoint, etc. will have to offer lower prices to attract customers away from Tesla's extremely reliable 33 cent flat rate with a charging plan in Texas right now.

Tesla already has member plans for non-tesla CCS charging at 33 cents in Texas using their Magic Dock.

I'll take my chances with electricity rates over the next 8 years which is how long the battery pack and drive train warranty is on the Rivian versus being a slave to the pump and filling up the coffers for some oil baron.

Magic Dock is just ONE site in Texas, DFW, and not far from RAN site. 0.33c is making it barely cheaper than gas car. And moving to renewables actually pushing cost up (like in CA - off peak rates 0.26c and up in most places). I think that moving money from oil companies to “green energy” companies is really moving money from one pipeline to another - same people get the money anyway.

If we want a green cheap energy - we need GEN4 nuclear stations, but we do not even have the technology available in US. The sad part of this - Russian RosAtom has this technology and building these stations all across the world...

Meanwhile, electricity prices in Austin up 15% from last year. And they are talking about raising them again.

During the first 4 years of warranty it is not a lot and for luxury cars maintenance is included (for 3-4 years). My previous Honda car cost me about 1000 for maintenance per year including tires.

Said that - convenience of not going to gas stations, and absence of requirement to schedule the service - is a huge plus (more than money IMHO).

Im not a fan of sitting in car dealership lobbies or trying to wait in line at Costco like sheeps to save 10 cents

They can mark it up and use the profits to invest in their infrastructure and make the transition to renewables to bring cost down and stay competitive.

The government will step in like they’ve done in the past and help subsidize/speed-up the transition to solar / EV.

I’m looking forward to the charging rates and infrastructure changes from now until my warranty expires. One thing for sure I’m excited about is installing solar in the next 3 - 5 years once I add another EV.

As for the first part - that is exactly the problem - EV car now (except Tesla) is more a “city” car. If you need to do a road trips often, you will pay the same as gas car or more (I was charged up to 0.79c per kW + tax), but more important you will play Russian roulette every time - as either charger will not work, or it will be derated, or there will be line of 3 cars so you will wait an hour to charge. Right now CCS infrastructure is a mess, and I just hope it will be much better in 2-3 years. But then we will realize our grid can not support the load and we will wait another 5 years for the grid :)

The only problem I have with “green” energy - for some reason they forgot about nuclear. Maybe because it is more difficult to get kick backs or maybe because one foreign country can not profit from it. Or maybe something else …


ANyway, I think I triggered off topic discussion, sorry about that.

Let us continue to enjoy our EV’s, regardless the cost, as it is a lot of fun Driving them, and even with all issues with charging I would not want to go back to ICE.

Summer of 2024 we get access to tons and tons of extremely reliable Tesla networks with lots of stalls. Rivian will provide a free adapter.

Already we are seeing the number of Tesla CCS compatible Magic Dock chargers roll out across the country. I even see them in Canada. They recently added one in Texas even after signing new agreement with auto manufacturers for them to adopt the NACS plug.

With the push from our government and the EPA requirements plus manufacturers statements about their EV rollout strategy.

I’m not worried at all about taking road trips in the Rivian.

lets be honest. Im not driving a Rivian cross country to save time or money. It’s for pleasure and at that point I’m not pinching Pennies.

I just booked a Southwest flight with 2 free check in bags, snacks, drink, wifi and points one way from Dallas to DC nonstop for $79. Do you really think any gas or EV will get me there cheaper and faster and more relaxed then having a pilot fly me at 555 mph?

when I take the Rivian out, I leave all the beans at home so I’m not sitting their counting my nickels and dimes. I’m adding up all the miles per smiles from light to light.

all the red ones are available today to charge non-tesla vehicles using a CCS plug via Magic Dock. The number of tesla chargers we will get access to will improve over the next 12 months. Road-trip and poor charging experience will be a thing of the past.

Haven’t watched the video but are these people comparing gasoline costs to DCFC? Because if so, they are clowns.
Why is that? It’s appropriate for road trips.

So far I’ve only charged at home. With my solar it costs me $5 a month to charge my T in the summer and about $50 in the winter. It’s Approximately a straight line between the two seasons depending on weather. I average only about 700 miles per month.

The video was about DC fast charging on a 3,000 mile road trip with some free opportunistic AC charging. All I can say is I picked a nice route the Rivian adventure network is fast and free and the Tesla Supercharger magic docks just work!
