Looking for some feedback on my purchase dilemma.

Option 1. Quad-motor Glacier White with Ocean Coast
Cost: $92000 + $1750 + $2000 + $1800 (destination) + $612.25 (doc fee & reg) + $11413.35 (tax) = $109,575.60.
Availability: 2-6 weeks (available in the shop)

Option 2. Dual-motor Glacier White with Ocean Coast
Cost: should be cheaper by about $8K plus tax = $101,000.
Availability: Not sure

Both satisfy all of my use cases in terms of their Range and Acceleration. If the cost and availability were your primary criteria, which one would you choose?

Thanks!

If someone else is in a similar boat as me, and doesn't have the time to look through the excellent feedback I received, then here is a summary of my decision:

I have decided to purchase the quad-motor R1S.

My reasons amounted to: (YMMV)
  • relatively small additional cost (at this time)
  • earlier availability
  • longer comprehensive car warranty
  • higher miles battery warranty
  • upcoming NACS compliance means that I can live with (I have lived with for many years!) the somewhat smaller range <-- if you haven't experienced the Tesla versus The Crap charging stations as I have, then you won't truly appreciate the difference between "It Just Always Works" versus "Miracle - This One doesn't seem to be Broken!" charging stations, but that's a topic for a different discussion.
  • better off-roading capabilities, I think (though either would get me to the hiking trails)
  • DRIFT mode!

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
The 8k difference is relatively minor considering the 100k entry point, so for me, that’s a wash.

Then it’s “do you want stupid power and capability” or “do you want still pretty amazing power and capability”; and Bosch vs. in-house.

Double win - available very soon, way more power. Quad wins.

You are looking at a base dual motor (not the performance dual motor)?

I have a quad motor R1S ordered (slated for Jan / Feb 2024 delivery) - $92k
I was told a performance dual motor (available 2023) - $91k

So only $1k difference in my case.

All good points; I hadn't factored the Bosch versus in-house motors. It was the out-of-spec review which made me doubt my original decision. So, I guess it wasn't just about the Cost and Availability.

I haven't heard about a price cut (doesn't mean that it's not coming, just that I don't know about it).

that’s just my guess, with model X at 80k now I think Rivian will have a hard time moving R1S at 90k+ and an indefinite wait

Longer warranty on the quad motor that and considering the DM is a new product built by Rivian. For as much as those things matter to you.

I think this too. Not sure Rivian can make it at current price points and no/reduced federal tax credit. Throw that in the mix and you are pound foolish to order the S over an X. Especially with the charging network. That advantage will diminish over time, but likely at least a couple of years getting everything done to make it happen.

Do not remind me of the X price cuts:mad:; that wound is too deep and fresh to think about... $36K drop ($126K->$90K) on the price of new Model X Plaid in one year. You make a good point though.

Longer warranty? I did not know that. Thanks!

I am guessing the same. I think R1S DM large pack drops to $79k from current $84k.

When I called Rivian customer support to inquire, this is what I was told:

Quad motor - 8 years / 150k miles
Dual motor - 8 years / 125k miles

Is it listed elsewhere that the dual motor vehicle has a shorter warranty?

Those are the warranty coverages for the battery/drivetrain; the comprehensive (a.k.a. "bumper to bumper") warranty is 5yr/60k for quad vs. 4yr/50k for dual.
