Part of the design challenge I have been playing with for my camp kitchen is how to have something a bit more compact/ easy to use on solo outings that don't require I deploy the full kitchen and dirty a pan.
Y'know, just sooo tedious.
My current fix is just using my hunting set
Titanium Mug
Soto Amicus Burner
Little can of fuel
(I used to have a JetBoil but got into UL gear before I broke my back, and the grams of the JetBoil were to severe to keep around)
While it meets the needs for boiling water for dehydrated meals I got thinking more about how I have this big ass battery and inverter that will power an air fryer, pressure cooker, and an induction stove and figured I needed a fire ban proof option for easy/lazy cooking
enter the Stoke Voltaic Joulle
I saw a few very small YouTube reviews from recent and decided to take a gamble with a slight Prime Days discount.
This thing is an electric JetBoil.
I'm actually impressed with the build quality and the overall fit/finish of the product.
It draws 500w, so I could also use it with some of my Bluetti/ Anker power stations, which I appreciate.
It has a couple "modes" that just set whether it boils and shuts off, or keeps boiling until dry.
Initial impressions are positive, boiled 8oz of water in under 3 minutes, had it on "drink" mode, brought it up to boiling and shut off perfectly I used it to make a cup of coffee, didn't have to wait any longer than grinding my beans and there was no issue with coffee being too bitter, so no problem there.
But alas, as a budding coffee snob I felt like a tool using a silicone pour over on a mug and not having a goose neck kettle to cascade the hot water over my freshly ground Colombian Gold. It felt like I was tempting fate, and if I made such an egregious error again, surely the nearest hipster would sneak into kitchen, confiscate my grinder, and ban me from REI (probably).
So I decided to reconfigure and hopefully streamline my trail brewing methods
I went through the process in my mind, Nespresso was too bulky, Mocha Pots always burn my coffee, Percolators are for sadists, French Presses are easy but that adds another vessel to pack.
But then it hit me.
This thing is basically just an electric JetBoil.
The JetBoil french press kit was actually really easy to dial in decent coffee.
Now it has me thinking that I may be able to get a french press plunger that fits the Joulle and make it into a nice little coffee maker as well as a mountain house meal maker.
If anyone has a JetBoil java kit and could provide the dimensions (diameter) of the press that would save me a trip to REI (assuming I'm not banned).
K, bye.
